children learn about environment with hands-on activities from the Environmental Center, the butterfly garden and planning and growing their own class gardens
This school does not 'promote' bullies, however they often find themselves up against parents of students who pull the 'not my child' card. This is a lose-lose situation, and unfortunately we all suffer because of it. Some students today seem to feel more entitled by parents and have expectations that they can behave and do as the choose with little to no consequences at home. Schools and teachers cannot be expected to raise our children- they only have them for 7 out of the 24 hours in a day. Gilkey tries to foster a sense of respect and responsibility, but that will only go so far if those same expectations are not upheld at home. I believe Gilkey has a wealth of positive attributes that go far beyond the few problems they occasionally experience, and I'm sure the teachers there, as well as most other parents and students would agree!
This school promotes bullies and does nothing to protect the children from them.the school offers to after school help for kids with learning disabilities.
We have only been part of the Gilkey family for two years. In that short amount of time, we have put down deep roots thanks to the caring teachers and friendly office support. The Parent's Club is very dedicated and works closely with the staff to ensure they meet the needs of the students and staff. The building has a new media center as well as an updated interior. The school is blessed to have close proximity and use of a multi-acre nature trail and environmental lab. The school has a student lead 'Green Council' that actively implements green options such as composting lunch waste. Due to a job change, our family must move and I am heartbroken to leave this school behind.
