My daughter and then her three children all attended Krieger. It is a delightful school with attentive teachers and just the right mix of fine academics, fun and discipline.

MANY concerns with this school: 1. large at-risk population with varied needs that are not getting met in the city of Poughkeepsie. 2. teacher's inability to manage classrooms effectively without yelling, screaming and disciplining entire class (despite few children in class who do not cause disruptions). 3. a decline in the level of education beyond 1st grade. 4. lack of positive role models at the school--administration talks about children having respect but there's little role modeling of respect. teachers are respectful and caring and instead they take their lead from the rough inner-city attitude. they need to rise above. an excellent addition to the school is Mrs. Clark. she has just the role modeling that the school needs. she also provides caring counsel to students in need. the biggest problem is how discipline is handled. students are out of control because there is a lack of appropriate rewards and consequences. reading first is great.

My son is a Kindergartener there and receives physical education twice a week, and art and music once a week. The Reading First program is working, as he is already a very good reader and his writing continues to improve. The school recently added a significant new wing to its building and they did a very good job, blending it nicely to the older building and adding whealchair access as well as an elevator, a beautiful media center library, and computer room for the older grades. While he has encountered a few problems with certain 'at risk' kids, he has made a handful of friend there and generally appears to like the school. The PTA there is strong and involved with fundraising and other activities planned throughout the year. Overall as a Title 1 school, it holds great promise for continued improvement in its national test results and rankings.
