I have a child that has been attending Ruffner Elem. for three years and we have had (so far) an excellent experience. The teachers are great and communicating with them is very easy, they are really knowledgeable and up on current events. The principal is hands-down the best. He will investigate any complaint a parent may have and the resolution usually will benifit both parties. Ultimately, keeping the childs best interest first.
A clarification of the parent input about the classroom with 'peers': I believe that parent is describing a special pre-school program designed for children with disabilities which is open to students without disabilities. While, of course, special education students are served throughout the grade levels, the ratio of students with disabilities is naturally higher in that classroom, and many activities are naturally specially designed to serve them. An advantage, however, is that the staff to student ratio is very high--almost 1 teacher or aide for 3 students. (this comment from a teacher at Ruffner)

This is my son's first year at Ruffner and he is doing great with the staff and other children in his class. The teachers are always very helpful and voice their concerns about my child. Parents are always included in class activities. This year (2004-2005) the children have finally recieved the new playground which the staff has been working very hard for many years to get for them. I think Ruffner school and staff are both very outstanding.

This is my daughter's first year at Ruffner. She is in a class which has regular students labeled as 'peers' and students with disabilities such as Autism. I feel that the class is a great opportunity for the students with disabilities, however, I feel that my daughter and the other 'peers' are at a disadvantage somewhat. I believe she would receive more of the challanges she needs in a traditional classroom. The teachers all seem to be very caring and they all work very hard. The principal is always visible at the school and is very approachable.
