I have 2 autistic children. One on each end of the spectrum. They attend Floyd Elementary School, which is a public school. It is incredible how much they have improved since going there. Special needs children are really taken care of there and are made to feel as much a part of everything just as much as a child with no problems. In a world today where people are afraid to get attached to the children, the loving teachers and staff in this school make the children feel loved and special. The children are very lucky. Also it extends to the loving care that the bus drivers give the children also. I have witnessed this a lot because I ride the preschool / special needs bus with one of my children.

I think this rating system is pretty funny. Floyd County's school system is about as good as you can expect from a rural county with no industrial tax base. Take it from someone who was educated here - the teachers at the high school truly care and work to prepare you for college. I attribute my success in college and life to many of the teachers I had in high school. I find it extremely funny that Safety and Discipline only has two stars. In my 13 years in school I saw less than 5 fights total. Go to Christiansburg or Blacksburg High and see if you can find anyone that says the same.

I have two children who attend Floyd Elementary, and I must say that Floyd is lacking in a few areas. There are not any before or after school programs for children such as adventure club, or tutoring help for children. It would certainly help parents who work outside the county. Other counties surrounding Floyd have these programs, and it is ashame that we do not.

My daughter has been attending Floyd E for the last two years. She has been given great attention, as well as being allowed to excell in areas such as math and reading. The key to a good education anywhere is parental involvment. The teachers and staff can only do what is needed during the school day. The rest is up to the parents. Let's quit blaming someone else for our own down fall.

Our six-grader Daughter, enjoys the freedom of choice. We allow her to pick and choose as she makes good choices, she has demonstrated responsibility in her decisions. Making (Pizza) & Tomatoes) are Vegetables came from USDA. Freedom of Choice.

No. I prepare my son's lunch just about every day due to his special needs so I know what he is consuming both for him and his class. I want to be aware of all ingredients in all foods/drinks which he is consuming.

If it is to keep allergic kids safe, then no. A strict rule of no peanuts or pb&j should be enough. My child's school had a peanut free table for double insurance. If for "nutritional" reasons, then NO! Since when is pizza a veggie????... More »
