Aberdeen Middle School

I went to this school in the mid 90s for the full 3 years. Not sure how much it's changed but when I went I had an good experience. I only had one teacher I didn't like. The school has a zero tolerance policy for fighting which provides a safe atmosphere, and encourages students to excel effectively. My grades were never better, before or after Aberdeen. Partly this was because when students do poorly, there is a system wherein teachers write daily progress reports about what the student turns in. These reports get signed by the teacher and parent. You couldn't get away with missing homework if you wanted to. This helped me stay on track significantly my 2nd year. So whether you have an over achiever or your child is having problems, Aberdeen can sort them out. You just have to work with them. Though sometimes a teacher would raise their voice, I never saw one do so without good reason. The school gets a bad reputation in the local area but pay no attention. This is only because it is racially diverse, which is actually a great thing about it. Many of the children are from military families and know how to behave. The friends I made at Aberdeen are the one's I have kept for life.

I had a student here for only a short time but knew many students who attended for the full 3 years. As a military family, we would love to move back to MD and have my children attend this school, faults and all. Parents need to get more involved in MOST schools. But my daughter misses what she DID experience and hates the school she is currently assigned in Texas. Parents make all the difference yet some schools, from our experience, are MUCH worse than AMS. Don't bite the hand that feeds you. Better than many!

This school means well, but has a few flaws. If you are an achiever, you get special attention, but I've noticed several students struggling who get left behind. They group students into teams based on achievment, but often place students in the wrong areas. For example, I am a self-motivated student, but was placed in a slower-moving class in the beginning of this year. Despite all these flaws, they really do try hard. I'd let my kids go here, if I had kids.

I have two children in AMS and am so positively surprised at how positively my daughter has excelled since going there. My son is in his final year and we have always had exceptionally good communication with the school. No matter what grade or teacher. They are so responsive and eager to share information on what is going on in class.
