I Graduated here in 1978, my Grandsons come here now. My son came here but went to another school because of being bullied, he lost his eye to cancer and other kid mean.
Unfortunately, money is tight for all school districts and they are faced with undesirable cutbacks. But Carlton has recognized the importance of music and physical activity for elementary students. They have a wonderful music teacher that incorporates instruments and poems into music and concerts. Gym class is still offered every day, unlike in other schools, so the children are getting the physical activity they need to stay healthy and help them focus in school. My third grader is always excited about what they are doing in gym and will come off the bus and want to snowshoe, or use the rip stick or continue to do what they are doing and stay active. A 4th grade teacher has recently added stability balls in the classroom to help the children with focus and balance. It is this kind of ingenuity and thoughtfullness that make this a great school.
My first attraction to this school was the small class size, and we have been very pleased by this. My concerns have been the lack of diversity training within the school climate and their approach to bullying/violence incidents. I would like to see improved after school activities as well as a Gifted and Talented program to offer students who need additional challenges. Overall, I think South Terrace is a good choice, but could be so much better with increased open-mindedness from the administration. I believe parent involvement would increase if the administrators (school board) were more effective and parent friendly.
This is a great school. It is a small community school & the children receive individual attention from the teachers. The school staff also take the time to evaluate the children to see if there are important issues in learning disabilities. The staff is friendly & are there for ths students.
