Academically, students at WA that want to learn do extremely well. WA offers many opportunities for these types of students. If a child has a hard time being motivated to do well in school this is not the place for that child. They have many extra activites for students to become involved with other than sports so there is something for everyone to do. It is hard to break into the boys' basketball scene if you have not grown up in the area. I have noticed that WA does provide a safe environment that allows boys to feel safe being on a cheerleading team. Very progressive. When I was a student, parents were not really encouraged to become involved.
My child transferred to Washington Academy during the sophomore year. I could not be happier with the school, students quickly accepted my child and were very friendly. The teachers have been great, they have spent a lot of extra time with my child getting caught up, because the local school that my child transferred from was behind academically. The teachers seem to really care about the kids and their performance. The atmsophere in the school is very good. Everyone seems to get along very well and the diversity in the student body is a real positive factor. The adminstration does not allow any bullying, harassing, and they don't tolerate anyone disrupting other students education (this was aproblem in prevoius schools). I was very pleased with the wide variety of activities. There seems to be something for everyone. This appears to be a very positive, safe and academically challenging school.
Everyone is very approachable at the school. Whenever my son has a problem, he does not hesitate going right to the headmaster to get help. It feels like he has become part of a family there, not just a student. I always feel welcome and listened to when I go in.
As a parent of a young man attending Washington Acadamy I was very pleased with the quality of teachers. My son is a bright student and he felt very challenged by their math and science cirriculum. The advanced classes offered are taught by some of the best teachers in our state. The issue related to drugs in the school are no better or worse than other schools. My children have attended schools outside of this area and also had the chance to attend Quaker schools in PA. High school I believe has the biggest challanges in educating our children. Experimentation,Autonomy and peer pressure all play a part in their development. The biggest influence in our young peoples lives are in fact their parenting.
