Montessori Elementary School is an excellent program for children to advance at their own rate. There is a lower elementary classsroom (grades 1-3) and an upper elementary classroom (grande 1-7). Children have their own 'works' in the morning that are taylored just for them. They are pulled out into different groupings for literature/Spanish with Danielle; knitting and early reading skills with Grammy and Aida; and PE with a class assistant. The children learn to work independently and as a group. They are responsible for progressing through their 'works' in the order they prefer with the option of going for morning snack when they are hungry. They pull together for classroom responsiblities and joint learning experiences about other countries and science. Like a one room school house, all of the children get to participate in a wide variety of activities from soccer to plays to mucical productions.
The education our three children have received at Montessori Elementary School has instilled in them the ability to manage their own time and the desire to take responsibility for their own learning. The resulting work ethic has been of particular benefit to our eldest child as a high school student attending an academically challenging prep school. But more importantly, the teachers at Montessori Elementary School have kept the joy and sense of discovery in learning that can be too easily lost or forgotten when state testing, lack of funding and teacher disputes loom like ever-present storm clouds. Instead, a genuine sense of community abounds at Montessori Elementary where the small school atmosphere and the excellent, self-paced academic instruction is nothing short of idyllic.
