The teachers at this school are great and truly care about the students. They work hard dealing with a very challenging demographic. The principal of 4 years has an indifferent attitude with parents, addressing them in a condescending rather than collaborative tone. The district has finally wised up and assigned a new principal, but don't seem to understand the gravity of their extended complacency. The new principal seems much more engaged. Resources don't seem to be fairly distributed as there is great disparity in class sizes, with kindergarten's hovering around 30 children per class. This is district wide. They try to make up in later grades for what they should have done in kindergarten. I only hope it is not too late for my children who attend.
Oakland Elementary School is an 'outstanding' school of education. This is my daughter's second year attending Oakland Elementary and there are so many wonderful teachers that have a 'hands on' approach to teaching and a phenominal staff (Mrs. Margaret Turner-Administrative Staff and Mr. Coats-Principal). My daughter is in the second grade and reading on a third grade reading level, both her math and language arts grades exceed my expectations already! I would highly recommend Oakland Elementary School to any new families in the Greenwood, South Carolina area. Thanks to Mrs. Jester and Mrs. Doolittle for teaching my child Ashlon! Amanda Daniels
