Pawleys Island's Waccamaw High School serves grades 9-12 in the Georgetown 01 School District. It is among the few public high schools in South Carolina to receive a distinguished GreatSchools Rating of 9 out of 10.
This school has an average Community Rating of 4 out of 5 stars, based on reviews from 17 school community members.
I am also a new parent and I agree with that last review. But I am not sure if that is just here in Pawleys. Parents everywhere need to encourage their kids to accept new kids. We never in a million years thought we'd ever have to move but here we are and it's been a huge adjustment. Thank goodness for my youngest child in elementary school. Those parents have been great and the kids as well.
I am a parent of a student that has nothing but trouble with the students at Waccamaw High School since moving here. If you did not grown up in the area, you will not find it a very welcoming place, you will have to work hard to find your place at this school. The teachers and administration have been great and they take pride in the school, but I wish the students could see the world beyond Waccamaw and open their minds and heart to new members of their community
I am an 07 graduate of WHS, and now at School in Virginia. Waccamaw gave me excellent preparation for college above and beyond simply schools in SC. Most teachers, some especially, take immense pride in their jobs, and do a great job. And as far as community is concerned, Waccamaw High is moreinvolved in the community than any school I have seen.
I am a parent of a 9th grader at this school. Wow, the administration is the best I have seen. It is refreshing to see teachers who care about their students and an administration that is concerned about providing a top notch academic experience for each pupil. So far I'm impressed. Great job Waccamaw High School.
i think this school is awesome. i love it i love it
I am not a parent, but a current student at Waccamaw High. The administration at this school (excluding Mr. Hughes because he is truly incredible) is ridiculous- no one truly takes pride in the school and the cleanliness of the visible hallways unless someone from the district or school board is visiting. Waccamaw has honors programs, yes, but nothing that would look too stunning when looked at along side of most other schools. Waccamaw is extremely limited in its extracurricular activies and classes. For a basic education that a student would have no interest in furthering, Waccamaw is key. But for those who wish to have a future, they are simply trapped within the boundaries of a limited education.
I attended WHS the past two years and i was very satisfied with the education that i received. there were many honors and college level classes offered, and the majority of the teachers and staff genuinely cared about their jobs. I would recommend WHS to anyone new to the area.
Waccamaw is a fantastic school that will definitely prepare a student for college or for the workforce. WHS offers Honors, AP, and PACE classes. Waccamaw is one of the best on the South Carolina Coast and I would reccomend it to anyone.
I am not a parent, but a graduate of WHS, class of 2002, though I got out in 2001, and I can say that waccamaw is a very good school to attend...the learning environment is exceptional, the teachers are great, and you leave with a better understanding of what your learning. I am currently inrolled in college, and most of the classes I'm taking are all classes I took at Waccamaw, and WHS really prepared me for college. I would recommend anyone wanting to obtain a higher education or advanced learning should definatly look at this high school, because it is a great school to attend.
I am not a parent, but I am a student who graduated from WHS. I feel it was a great school with wonderful teachers. In rebuttal to the previous review, I was an honors student, who took HONORS classes. WHS is the best school in the area for advanced classes. I also took two PACE courses through Waccamaw: Biology101-102 and English101. AP Calculus and English were also offered. St. James might also be a good school, but it has only been around 2 years. The one benefit St. James has is that it is in Horry County, where schools get more money. If you live in the Lowcountry, Waccamaw is the best choice.
