This is our second year at Independence and we are not very happy with it overall. It may be that we are used to things being handled a certain way--in the spirit of excellence--and at Independence, things 'just happen'. Mrs. Chandler and a couple of the PTO members basically run the entire school. They don't seek parent participation; PTO only meets when a couple of the PTO officers can meet--during the school/work day, which eliminates most parents from attending. You really don't know what's going on until it's happening. I must say that a couple of the teachers are excellent to work with--and we are going to suffer since Ms. Little, the guidance counselor, has moved on, as she was very interactive with the children.

I have a daughter who attended this school and is now in middle school. She is an honor roll student every time report cards are issued. I credit the care and understanding of the entire staff at Independence with giving her the encouragement she needed to succeed. She had alot of bad things to overcome and everyone at Independence was always there to help. I also have a son, who is currently attending Independence, he is ADHD, with the exception of one teacher, the staff has been very helpful with helping him live up to his full potential. He is a very smart boy, but it is difficult for him to stay focused on his work, but the teachers take the extra time with him and he too, is an honor roll student. The entire staff: secretaries, teachers, custodial, cafeteria staff and Mrs. Chandler are great. They really get to know their students and are there to help with their needs!
