School highlights:
Mrs. Williams is the best 2nd grade teacher ever!! Everbody should request her. Next year she will be a 3rd grade teacher. The Vice principal is a problem and she does not do what is right for yor child. She should go back to school to learn about childrens rights.
I am extremely irate at the low level of educational perspectives at this school. The school focuses on 'test' scores, rather than teaching, and learning. There is no fine arts program, no extra curricular activities other than tutoring to raise tests scores of course, they are not a charter school nor a magnet school.
The experience at this school depends on the teacher you get. Ms. Livingston was wonderful and Ms. Loftin has been an angel long awaited. A resilient child will fare well but one who needs support in their educational pursuits will struggle endlessly. There are no 'better' options in the surrounding area and the ignorant mindset of this community is rampant. If you have any control where you live then don't move here! The military should allow parents to use the $2500 they give the schools per child attending to use it towards the private schools.
I am sure you can find parents on both sides of the issue and a lot of times emotions are in response to 'problems' the teachers were having with the student but I am one who did not have behavior issues. That is why I feel compelled to comment. Mrs. Lee does not care what the parents think. I am completely aware of the treatment by my child's teacher of the students and Mrs. Lee did nothing to address the issues. I was disgusted all year by the continuous nonprofessional behavior by the teachers. -Mad Mom
I have 2 children that attend here. We love the teachers and Mrs. Lee. The teachers have always helped us know what we could do as parents to help our kids. The chorus group is great for the kids to socialize and get a sense of teamwork. The teachers keep a great learning environment and balance discipline and academic freedom very well. I was surprised to see Mrs. Lee didn't help a parent. She is usually very helpful! Maybe someone caught her on an 'off' day. They happen to all of us!
I was a little afraid of letting my daughter go to this school this year after reading some reviews. They proved me wrong. You can't always judge something or someone based on someone else's experience. It's always different for someone else. Our's is good. Excellent Principal who does care about this school, and children. Come see for yourself. Don't let one's own negative opinion turn you away. You'll find a lot more positive ones to make up for that one.Smile, there is always something positive around the corner.Just need to look.
I am extremely displeased with this school in whole. Very unfair to the child.
My daughter was a second grader this year at Shaw Heights. I absolutely hated this school. My daughter passed but can barely write a sentence that makes sense. Despite the time I spent working with her she simply did not improve. When I asked her teach for assistance or ideas on ways to help at home I was told this was not her responsibility. She stated 'Once the students leave my classroom I am no longer responsible for their learning. What you do with them at home is up to you, I do not have time to talk with each individual parent about ways to help their child improve.' When I took my concerns to Ms. Lee the school principal I was dismayed and angered to find the same type of attitude. My child will not be attending Shaw Heights next year!
I am very pleased with Shaw Heights. My son is a 3rd grader this year, he looks forward to going everyday. The teachers have been great, the staff have been very friendly. The ladies in the office even notice you when you walk in the front door. As for the last post, the principal and the assistant are not always at the front door, they have other duties as well. There are teachers or assistants at the enterance until it is time for students to be in class. If there is not someone out there chances are your child is late. There are several ways for parents to be involved, the teachers, staff, PTA welcome you at all times. Parents are encouraged to be involved. I am a parent and active volunteer at the school, I see what goes on behind those doors. After two years at Oakland, this school RULES!!
One of my main issues or concerns is the safety of the kids that attend this school which are kids on second and third grade. They only have one person in the mornings to greet them until 7:25 am. After that nobody is around...Some parents drop their kids up in the main entrance where they are not supposed to and keep blocking the traffic and make it flow slow...I have call twice and still i saw the same situation everyday. My other point is that the principal never show her face in the mornings to greet the students when they are dropped by their parents or even the assistant principal shows outside the school premises. Last year in my daughters school the principal and the assistant principal always greet their students every morning.I think this is very important to run a school.
