Is this even a schools ? Felt like i am sending my kids to a prison. Pulled my kid within 6 mths and moved him to kingsbury . So happy with my decision.
The Principal in the school seems to make her own guidelines and then infer they are the "District or States" policies. I have verbal and written verification that she has told a face to face untruth to myself and seems to be all others at the school. There are a lot of really good teachers there but when they are foillowing self made policies(made by Ms.Tomlin) then it gives an err of inability. The safety and overall cleanliness are very good. Leadership is the thing thats needed the most at Oakland. Parental involvement could be stronger also. I beleive if the parent wasnt made to pay for the SLED background check then the Parental issue would be minimized.
Time and time again I walk out of this school infuriated with the behavior of the teachers and staff. There are a few exceptions, but there is no respect for the children by most of the teachers. I have heard name calling from teachers to students and every time I volunteer I feel terrible for the kids. The principal will listen to your problems, but do nothing about it.. Nothing will change because nobody there wants to change. The kids are raised to disrespect people since the teachers show them by their example. If you can afford private schools do it!!!
My son has attenended this school for three years. The first two were a very good experience. The third was not. It seemed like we were home schooling him. They put much pressure on the parents for the students success. The parents really have to step up at home if the student falls behind. We are lucky. My wife and I have time to help him. Some other families may not have the rescources. I hope that my son gets more out of the school next year. We will have to consider private school if he doesn't. My wife and I are not school teachers. Maybe it was just a bad year. Like I said, the first two were good.
Great experience for my child! Outstanding staff and curriculum. Definitely 2 thumbs up!
Oakland is a great school. I am very happy to have my children attend such a warm and inviting place. The administrators, teachers and staff are truly concerned about the students. I love how the administrators greet and get the students out of the cars in the mornings.
My child went here for pre k for special needs children for just 6 weeks. They acted like they didn't have time to treat her properly so I put my daughter in a private school until we can move. I say run away from this school. I don't think I would even leave my dog there, let alone my child!
I am very satisfied with the school as a whole. I had heard a lot of things about Oakland through friends and the other reviews online. Most comments were negative. I was nervous at first, but I sent my daughter to school anyway, she started Kindergarten. I am vert pleased with my childs, teacher. I had a problem with another child harassing my child. I told the teacher and she was on top of the problem, and got it resolved very quickly. For a whole the school has been a wonderful experience, and I totally feel secure with my child attending there as long as she can. They are a safe, friendly environment and I recommend highly to people to send their children to Oakland.
I was not satisfied with how the principal responded to the issues that I had with my son's teacher concerning his progress. The principal totally disregarded anything that I had to say about the issues, constantly took up for the teacher, and ignored my requests to 'look' into the issues. The teacher was not really open to parental visitations during the school day which I feel is very important. It was like it truly bothered her that you actually came to the school and interrupted her lesson.
I read the reviews here before my son started at OPS and was afraid to send him, fortunately I did and found that this is the best school I've ever seen. It's a poor school in a poor area and they still are better than the expensive private and public schools in the area. The teachers are there because they care, not for money or the 'name' of the school. 'Don't judge a book by it's cover'. Go OPS!
My son has been at OPS for Pre K and now K and has had a very rewarding experience. There are faults in the school as in any school. I stay very involved in my son's schooling and feel that I am making an impact on not only his learning but that of the other students. There are staff members whom I do not like because of the way they treat the children. My solution: I wrote a very formal letter to the principle and also the local district office about my observations. I have heard back from both with their response and the actions that were taken. I think OPS can be a great school....if you let it!
I have taught at Oakland for the past 5 years as a 1st grade teacher, and I know first-hand that we are definately not in it for the money. All educators have to have a love of students and teaching in order to stay in the profession. Parents, the quality of your child's educational experience does not only depend upon the teacher, or the school. You are your child's first and best teacher. Get involved and stay involved! Also, keep in mind that private schools do not have required standards for what your child will learn, or qualifications of their teachers. They are not always the better choice.
There are smiles in the morning and after school, but during the day, the smiles fade. Please come in an look for yourself durning lunch or other busy times, to get an accurate feel of the school. And Parent involvement are always the same 20 parents at most.
Oakland Primary is a great school with a great staff. My child attened this school and had a wonderful experience. The teacher and assistant were very loving and caring. My child learned so much during his kindergarten experience. First grade was equally rewarding. The administrator placed the students first. She impressed me as I would hear her calling each child by name. She always had something nice to say to the boys and girls and was always visible in the hallways, at the bus area and the parent pick-up/drop off area. You could find her helping the students out of their cars in the morning and telling the boys and girls to have a wonderful day. This was an A+ experience for my child and I.
I am at that school when I can be at the school but it seems like there are only 5 parents who actually come in and help. For me I have found the staff very helpful.
I am a parent of two children at this school and I am disappointed at the prior comments because everyone complained but no action or volunteering was mentioned. I realize that the school is not perfect but I get involved where I see a problem and I don't just give up and whine. We as parents have an enormous responsiblity to work with the schools. Those parents needed to get on the school improvement council and find solutions. If everyone ran to the private schools the same problems will arise there I assure you. So, I say to the parents stop complaining like the rest of this country and get involved.
I have had a child in this school since Jan 03. I have not been happy with the school as a whole. The majority of the staff are rude! I have voiced my concerns and nothing has been done. The children have too much unsupervised free play time and not enough instruction time. I fear our children will fail or be behind at their next school.
I must say that I was very disappointed with many aspects of my daughters experience. My daughter was treated terribly by other students and even the teacher. I had to call and meet with the teacher on several occasions. Nothing was done about the complaints. My daughter attended after school tutoring and the teacherwas teaching her a different way to do her math and inturn I believe made matters worse and confused her. I had expressed my concerns and the teacher asked me several times about the teacher and stated she would check into it and never did! The discipline in the classroom was horrible and my daughter was continually repremanded when at times she wasn't to blame. She would come home crying and upset on many occasions. I was not a very good experience. She is now in a private school and has done wonderful! Money well spent
I agree with the other parent the administrative is not very good. The principle and a majority of the teacher do very little to ensure the child succeed. The school does not offer any tutoring or summer programs if your child falls behind. Their only solution for the child is to repeat the entire year. District 17 has tutoring and summer school for kids that need additional help, so parent I would think twice about enrollong your child in this school you will regret it, I sure did.
Very weak administration. I was also a teacher in this district at another school. A better learning environment, with more opportunities for my own child was one of my main motivators for changing jobs. Nothing is done about discipline problems but this is not because the teachers don't try, they get no support from the principal. There is also definite racial tension in the school. The sad thing is that there are some wonderful teachers at this school and my child was lucky enough to have one of them. Many have left because it is such a hostile work environment for them.
