Our middle school daughter has attended Wilson Hall since the first grade. We have been extremely pleased with her education and are amazed by her growth and progress. As a new family, to not only the school but to the town of Sumter six years ago, we were welcomed into the Wilson Hall Family with open arms. As clich 'as it sounds, Wilson Hall truly is a family. It is a family comprised of dedicated students, parents, teachers, administrators and staff working together, and it is amazing to see what this small school can accomplish! Watching how hard these students work toward a goal, whether it is in academics, the performing arts, or in sports, is inspiring! At Wilson Hall the students are learning so much more than just a college preparatory curriculum, they are learning how to be respectful, responsible, goal oriented young adults who will make future contributions to society - preparation for life beyond campus. I highly recommend visiting Wilson Hall if you are looking for a quality education in a safe, friendly environment

We are a military family and choosing the right school is our top priority when we have to relocate. After researching the local high schools in the Sumter area Wilson Hall surpassed them all. Wilson hall offers a phenomenal and challenging college preparatory curriculum. There is an honor code which reflects the safe and friendly learning environment. Teacher to student ratio allows the teacher time to dedicate to individual student needs. The latest in technology such as LCD projectors, computers, smart-boards, Ipads etc.., are used to enhance the learning experience. This year Wilson hall had two National Merit Finalists. They are the only two in this area. Also this year 96% of the graduates received $4.4 million in scholarships. A variety of music, dram, art, and extracurricular activities are offered. This year Wilson Hall has won eight SCISA Championships in football, girls bowling, baseball, softball, chess, drama, debate, and literary meet. No school in this area can compare to the excellence here at Wilson Hall. I would highly recommend any military family coming to the area to explore Wilson Hall as an option for your child. I'm sure you will chose Wilson Hall.

I have been exceptionally pleased with my son's education at Wilson Hall. The school stresses traditional educational values in a friendly environment with small classes and no discipline problems. With an average of 15-20 students in a high school classroom, the teachers can individualize lessons in ways that would be impossible in a larger setting. Although every classroom is equipped with smart boards, LCD projectors, wifi, etc., the school remains focused on skills such as reading, math, science, critical thinking, and problem solving. The technology supports the education instead of substituting for it. WH graduates have the highest GPA of all SC high schools that sent students to USC. The AP classes are taught to national standards, not local ones like the community "college classes" offered at some area schools. There are a wide variety of art, music, drama, and language classes and many athletic opportunities. Recent and current graduates are attending: West Point, UVA, Duke, UNC, Vanderbilt, Univ of Chicago, Carnegie Mellon, NC State, and Purdue, to name a few. This year the school had two National Merit finalists - the only ones in the area.

Academics are the very last thing this school considers important. For example, 30 yr old text books, ABSOLUTELY no technology (and no interest in it), and NO professional development are completely accepted at this overblown school. If you are interested in indoctrinating your children in a system based mediocrity and appearances only (i.e. the "right clothes," hairstyles, etc., this is the school for your children. We moved here (military family) two years ago having lived all over the world, and we can most accurately state that this is the MOST BACKWARDS SCHOOL our children have ever attended - hands down.

When I was looking for schools for my children, Wilson Hall immediately caught my attention. I grew up in Sumter and had heard all of the stereotypes about the Wilson Hall student. All it took to break that image was one stroll through the hallways. The environment was welcoming, comfortable, and family-like. After a quick glance at the flyers, art, and student work on the walls, it was easy to see that Wilson Hall builds its prestigious reputation not only on a challenging academic curriculum, but also on its ability to cater to any student's strengths. Wilson Hall's extra curricular clubs and activities have expanded exponentially since I've been sending my children. From art, to drama, to sports, to Legos, Wilson Hall has provided a safe, encouraging environment where both of my children have grown to love learning and being a Baron!

I have 2 children who have graduated Wilson Hall. I have one who is a sophmore this year. I can assure you that they not only have , and are, recieving an excellent education, their overall high school experience has been nothing short of outstanding. The administration and faculty are second to none and they have excellent extra-curricular activities. Their athletic teams are quite competitive and have won many state championships. The curriculum is demanding and all who attend are expected to be accepted into a four year college or university. The campus has great facilities and the tuition is very reasonable. One visit to the campus will verify what i have stated above.

We have been very pleased with Wilson Hall for our daughter. We are a military family, and it is somewhat challenging to find a new school with each move that meets our expectations, yet Wilson Hall has done this. They made sure that we were well aquainted with the school through tours, counselor meetings, and having a mentor family before school started, which helped with the anxiety of starting at a new place. I know that she is well prepared to head off to college thanks to the teachers, counselors, and staff who truly do support the school and the children. Also, the class sizes are very manageable so the teacher is able to give each student the attention they need. I would definetly recommend Wilson Hall!

It is hard to imagine a better environment for students of all ages. The teachers are hands on and encourage involvement from the parents who particpate in amazing numbers. There is no school in the area, private or public, that can be objectively compared.

I have a middle and high school student at Wilson Hall. They started Wilson Hall in K-4. I have been very pleased with the school's rigorous academic curriculum. My children are not straight "A" students, but Wilson Hall has challenged them to do their very best. Wilson Hall is preparing them for college, which is the reason I chose to send them to this school. Over the years, I have realized there is more than academics at Wilson Hall. Wilson Hall also enriches them in ethics, family values and spiritual values. Wilson Hall has become the "village" that is helping me to raise my children. Wilson Hall also has a great fine arts program and athletic program. I have framed and hung art and attended drama and chorus productions, with a great smile.(I never knew they could be so talented, because my husband and I are not talented in the arts.) Wilson Hall's athletic program is also superior. My boys enjoy sports and it is also healthy for the brain. Lastly, the teachers and faculty want your child to succeed. The headmaster, Mr. Moulton, knows every child in the school. Wilson Hall is truly a family oriented school that will prepare your child for college and life.

My children came to Wilson Hall in the sixth and ninth grades. As with any transition, there are concerns if your children will be welcomed, happy, and productive. With one child now a freshman in college and the other a Wilson Hall sophomore, we realize that our decision was the best we have ever made for our children. Wilson Hall is a family, an extended family of students, faculty, staff, and parents that not only welcomed our children during the middle of their education but also nurtured them well beyond our expectations. Our children have increased in knowledge and stature, but most importantly have grown ethically and morally with a sense of passion and purpose that is an emulation of this wonderful school community.

My son has attended Wilson Hall since preschool. Wilson Hall not only has an excellent academic reputation, but also championship athletic teams and award-winning fine arts programs! The school combines a balanced education with core principles of honor and respect that fully prepares students for success throughout their lives. Wilson Hall encourages students to think critically, communicate clearly, develop their individual talents, and pursue a lifelong passion for learning. In closing, Wilson Hall has a family atmosphere. There are many opportunities for family involvement. The school has many special traditions. There is no other school in the Sumter area that compares to Wilson Hall!

Both of my children have attended Wilson Hall since preschool. One is in college now and has been extremely well prepared for the rigors of a biology major in college. He followed the honors track and took numerous AP classes in high school, so he had been exposed in high school to virtually all of the material he encountered his freshman year in college. My other child is following the same track and has had an excellent experience. The class sizes are small, the teachers take a personal interest in the students, the school enforces an honor code, and there are virtually no discipline problems or distractions. I like that the school fosters basic values with morning devotion, the pledge of allegiance, community service, etc. The older students interact with the younger students and set positive examples for them. The sports programs are high quality, and both of my children valued their athletic experiences very much. The families are very involved with volunteer activities at the school, and the school is very welcoming to new families.

My both of my children graduated from Wilson Hall and we could not have been more pleased. The faculty is outstanding and spent ample time assisting my kids when they needed help. Not a day goes by that I don't thank everyone - from admissions to guidance, and of course, the outstanding faculty. The staff was always there to support my children. This is not an "elitist" school, but a school that embraces children and offers them a variety of choices to find their way. It is also a very well-balanced school. I have seen outstanding drama presentations and listened to beautiful choral performances. I have witnessed the best student spirit in the state at athletic events. There is something for everyone if your child wants to be prepared to stand on his/her own in college. I believe that two of the major benefits my children received by attending Wilson Hall were the creation of self-discipline and learning time management - two traits which helped facilitate success not only in college, but later in life.

I was very apprehensive about transferring to a new school for my sophomore year, but my move to Wilson Hall could not have been any easier for me. The faculty welcomed me with open arms and made me feel like I had been a student there for years, and I made friends very quickly. After being at a large public school, I was surprised to find a school where the students respected the faculty, good manners were practiced, and students wanted to do well in school. I was also surprised that a smaller school could offer so much in the way of sports, like the equestrian team, to extracurricular, like the outstanding chorus. Now that I'm in college, I realize even more how valuable my Wilson Hall experience was.

We are family that has moved around often. Our son only attended public schools before entering college. When we moved to Sumter we decided to send out daughter to Wilson Hall and after 4 years, have not regretted this decision. We wanted her to receive the best academic education possible. Socially, many reviews speak of "clicks" or elitism and I would agree there are clicks. However, all schools private or public struggle with this issue. We are not wealthy and our child is not in the "click", but the great thing about this school is that it doesn't matter. There is something and somebody for everyone. The classes are small and the students know all of their classmates very well. My daughter has found that even if you are not invited to hang out on weekends with certain groups, they are still nice kids and very polite to her. This is not a mean school. Wilson Hall encourages independence, pride in yourself, your education and your school. I know my child is on the path to not only being successful in college but in life. What more could a parent want?

Moving from a very good public school system in Virginia, we tried the public schools in Sumter at first. What a mistake! My children were so far ahead of their classmates that they were bored. After a year we made the switch to Wilson Hall and it was the best decision we ever made. Both of my children found a challenging curriculum in an incredibly safe, nurturing learning environment. They went from hating to go to school to never wanting to miss school. Being able to play on state championship athletic teams and participate in a thriving performing arts program just enhanced their experience. My oldest child received a very generous college scholarship and is at one of the top public universities in the nation, and I attribute this to his experience at Wilson Hall.

I attended Wilson Hall from preschool until 12th grade and I had an amazing experience. Although I no longer attend and am in college I still call Wilson Hall home. Teachers truly care and work to help you be successful. I'm overly prepared in college and am so thankful for my years at Wilson Hall. Being a part of the Wilson Hall family is a special thing and one that really made a mark on my life. I would recommended Wilson Hall to anyone who was considering sending their children there. Being in an environment where you are known and loved by your teachers and facility can do nothing but allow you thrive in school in all aspects.

As a military family, we moved quite often and our children attended numerous schools. Our best experience, by far, has been with Wilson Hall. It is so good, in fact, that we have chosen to retire in Sumter so that all of our children can graduate from WH. Outstanding academics, top athletic teams, a wide variety of extracurricular activities including an incredible fine arts and performing arts program - the school has it all.

I expected my children to be way ahead of their peers after attending WH. They weren't. After leaving WH, my children were enrolled in two different public school systems and they were exactly on-track for "honors" students. WH teachers are using the same photo-copied worksheets & assigning the same projects that they have for the last 20 years. WH's cirriculum is behind & desperately needs to be modernized. What it comes down to is, at WH you are paying for the elitist environment. We should've enrolled our children in Millwood Elementary & Alice Drive Middle, and saved a lot of money!

Wilson Hall is an excellent school with an incredible faculty and stellar leadership. They were true partners in the development of our two sons through the high school years. The academics are second to none, and we attribute the success our sons have achieved thus far in college to the challenging curriculum they had at Wilson Hall. Our sons were permitted to test themselves in the classroom and on the athletic field in a challenging and supportive environment. The friends they made are friends for life, and include many of the faculty members they grew to admire and emulate. We were blessed to have been stationed here in Sumter, and to have been fortunate enough to have experienced the family atmosphere at Wilson Hall.

I attended wilson hall from preschool to my freshman year, i finally made the switch to sumter high school which was the best decision of my life. Wilson doesnt offer near as many classes nor many oppurtunities for succes. Also you either fit in or you don't. I fit in but i was just fed up with the teachers, many are not certified and they feel that they can do or teach whatever they want because their a 'private school'. If you really want the best for you kids socially and academically i wouldnt recommend wilson hall. I love sumter high and the teachers help you so much more than just lecture. Its the best way to prepare for college.

As a military family that chose Sumter as a long-term stop, we have had the opportunity to experience both the public and private schools over the last ten years. When the public schools stopped being able to control the classroom environments, my two oldest asked that we not send our middle school child to the high school. We listened and chose Wilson Hall. We haven't regretted our decision once. Our shy child has become very involved in student government, academic competitions, and sports. In fact, knowing that we were spending so much on tuition (three trips to see grandpa!), he asked that we trust him to earn a full scholarship to college, if we would invest in his education today. Given his academic success and overall attitude, we plan to keep him there for the duration of his education...thanks to a great environment and overall experience.

Wilson Hall is one of the private schools in Sumter. It also happens to be the best. My son is a 7th grader and been attending since 3rd grade (K-2nd were in the public school system). His class size is approx 120 students (4 classrooms of 30 kids). My son, being small in stature, is able to participate in sports he would never make in a larger school (namelly football). Academically, kids must perform. Several parents send siblings to other public schools if they can't make the grade here. Tution is ~5000.00 per year ... a bargain given that Columbia (nearest major city 35 miles west) charges ~10000.00 and up for their private schools. If you are looking for a small school with challenging curriculum designed to prepare your child to attend college, then this is the best choice in Sumter. Sincerely, Lt Col Dan Buschor

We are a military family with a son who just started at Wilson Hall this year. We have moved a lot and this school has had the most advanced curriculum and work load by far. Our child has had to do a lot of catching up, however, we have felt that the teachers and administration truly want our child to succeed and have always offered extra help so he can reach the level of the other children. Our son likes the school's extra curricular activites and has felt welcomed in the middle school. We wish he had been exposed to this higher level of education from the start but feel it is better late than never. It has been encouraging to know that our son wants to stay at Wilson Hall despite the work load and difficult test schedule. We recommend Wilson Hall!

As a military family we were concerned about finding the right school when we moved to Sumter. We are extremely pleased with our decision to send our child to Wilson Hall. The classes are challenging, but quite enjoyable for our middle schooler. It is obvious that the teachers are committed to educating the students and care about seeing them succeed. The school also has such a welcoming environment; it actually feels like a second family to our daughter. We have seen our child become more independent and self assured both socially and academically since she has been at Wilson Hall. We are confident that Wilson Hall has prepared her for the challenges of high school. I would highly recommend this school, especially to any military families moving into the Sumter area.

Wilson Hall has been an excellent choice for our children. As a military family, our children have experienced several different schools among our travels. Wilson Hall ranks up at the top. The strong academics is just one area that attracted us to the school. Safety, athletics, and the family like environment are several more reasons why we have been pleased with Wilson Hall. Our youngest is in the lower school. Others have stated the workload to be elevated. It is; however we view this as a positive. The repetitive nature of the assignments builds strong math, reading and english skills and a foundation to build on. Our eldest is in the middle school and transitioned well from a previous accelerated program. All in all, we are pleased with Wilson Hall and our children love it too.

Wilson Hall is undeniably the best school in Sumter, and possibly the state. As a parent, I wholeheartedly support and endorse the school. From kindergarten through high school the administration and faculty work hard to form a family atmosphere and they succeed. They are one of the most successful independent athletic programs in the state winning state championships regularly in different sports and having won the President s Cup which is an award given to the state s top independent athletic program. Academically they stand out even further, sending students from Stanford to Harvard and everywhere in between. The annual cumulative scholarship amounts awarded its seniors is staggering and the list of schools to which they have been accepted is equally amazing. This level of success begins in kindergarten with a commitment to building on that foundation at every level. Another facet of Wilson Hall that leads me to label it the best school in the county and possibly the state is the cost. Wilson Hall consistently outperforms other independent schools in other cities whose tuitions run double and triple that of Wilson Hall. In today s economic environment, this has become even more important. I have two children at Wilson Hall and they love it. Dropping them off everyday for school is a lot easier when you know the quality of education they are receiving when they walk through the doors.

I graduated from Wilson Hall and have an 8th grader there. For the money, there is no equal. Other schools equivalent to Wilson Hall cost 3-4 times what Wilson Hall costs. I agree with one parent who said that the lower school kids have lots of busy work (home work) but thats not all bad. I have a self-driven child so I never had to do the work with her.

Wilson Hall has a great reputation. From all we've seen, the high school curriculum is excellent. However, the elementary curriculum falls short. Wilson Hall has somehow decided that quanity = quality. The elementary students spend a lot of time on homework, and arrive up to 40 minutes early (in order to complete the morning busy work). Any student at any school can do worksheet after worksheet and look busy. But this is not indicative of the quality of education being given to each student. Until the administration of the lower school is able to weed out the teachers who rely on volume and busy work, the elementary students will suffer. I would not recommend this school to anyone with a bright or gifted student. Their elementary child will wither away from boredom if they choose Wilson Hall.

Wilson Hall parents do take pride into their children and its school. This is the way it should be, but this school does not let everyone in. On application for entrance, the family is asked many questions so that the staff can determine their status instead of the students ability. Also, we as a community must realize that the school is a choice but these people have the same issues and problems that we have, they just have more money to hide it.

I currently attend Wilson Hall and I really enjoy it. The teachers are great and strive to make a personal relationship with their students. The academics are challenging but I believe they prepare me for an easier college life. However, it doesn't offer as many opportunities or classes as public school. Which is is the norm for most private schools. The Wilson Hall experience is like no other. The uncanny pep rallies, great atmosphere, and school spirit offer a completely unique experience from any other school. Most students are very friendly and warm to their peers. However, not all kids may like Wilson Hall. Especially kids that enjoy a large school and many different types of people. For instance, if I was really different or extremely dedicated to the performing arts, then I would go to the local public school. Overall, I think Wilson Hall is a great school.

I attend Wilson Hall for six years. There are both good and bad things about the school. I loved Wilson Hall because of all the fun activities that the students as a whole were involved in, like the floats or pep rallys and football games. I also liked it because everyone knew each other. Unfortunately, that was not always a good thing. You also have to have money to fit in. If you do not, you will not be fully welcomed and accepted. Each grade has their own 'clicks'. You're either cool and popular, or not. Wilson Hall is not for everyone. You have to have money and smarts. I have been to both private and public schools in Sumter and they are all great. It really depends on the person!

Wilson Hall truly offers the most unique and fulfilling experience a student could ever have. Having encountered many graduates from premier schools around the nation, I have grown to appreciate even more the excellent education and ideal experience offered at WH. I was fully prepared for a top-20 college and am forever indebted to the faculty and administration at WH. As a recent graduate of Wilson Hall, I would recommend this school to anyone in the area. I attended Wilson Hall fourth through twelfth grade; there was a feeling of welcoming when I first went and that continued until I graduated always a great sense of family and community. As far as academics go, I cannot give the teachers and administration enough praise. Wilson Hall offers a challenging curriculum. As a freshman in college right now, I have never felt so prepared. Wilson Hall has the college prep and offers the Advanced Placement classes that prepare students for anything that comes their way in college. The school maintains an outstanding athletic program faculty and all students are extremely supportive. Students can also be involved with student council, honor societies, and clubs. I could go on, but there are too many wonderful points to mention. Wilson Hall is a fantastic school!

As a former student of Wilson Hall, I highly recommend it to anyone and I plan to send my children to Wilson Hall if and when I settle down in Sumter. The teachers are not only great academically, but they offer a personal relationship as well. Also, the athletics are great, and the new facilities are top of the line. As an alumni of Wilson Hall I can truly say that my experience in high school could not have been better. I was able play sports and was challenged academically. Now that I have a child at Wilson Hall I am so proud of the school Wilson Hall has become. Academically it is far and above the best. The expansion of the campus is evidence of the alumni support. Often times Wilson Hall is labeled as the 'rich kid' or 'prep' school. While there are financially secure parents whose children go to Wilson Hall, there are a fair share of students whose parents sacrifice each month so that they can attend WH. If you are considering Wilson Hall know that you will be accepted and welcomed into the Wilson Hall family. Go Barons!

Excellent school with excellent teachers. Elementary school staff is stable and a strong group, some great teachers for middle school, Science and Math departments in high school are strong, and well-rounded spiritual atmosphere. I currently have child in the school and consider it money well spent. Public school alternative for me is not good. Many chances for child to fit it with expansion of drama programs. New building projects have campus looking good. One word of caution is the blatant liberal slant that exists in high school history program. For a school with many military and traditionally conservative parents, there is concern with how some of the history classes are being taught. But other than that, nothing but good things can be said about Wilson Hall.

An absolutely incredible educational environment--challenging academics with a nurturing faculty and administration, successful athletic programs with supportive coaches, numerous interesting extra-curricular activities and clubs, active parents and accepting and truly friendly students combine to create a place where strong moral character is forged--students absolutely thrive and excel at Wilson Hall. Our sons are being prepared to become not only excellent students--but quality people. I thank God every day we were stationed here and our sons given the blessing of attending this unique institution.

My wife and I both graduated from Wilson Hall and credit it with not only our success, but also the long-lasting friendships we enjoy in the community. My son graduated from Wilson Hall and is doing extremely well in a competitive college, which offered him an academic scholarship, and my two younger children are in the high school. The 'Wilson Hall Family' is not just rhetoric, it is the best way to describe the atmosphere of the school. When my son returns from college on breaks, the first place he visits is the school to see his teachers; he also goes to the football and basketball games because he knows his friends will be there. There are not many schools with this type of loyalty and close-knit camaraderie.

I attended this school my freshman year. While it is an excellent, challenging school with great teachers, I was disappointed by the overall 'rich kid' attitude. I was very disappointed that there was no high school choir. I would not send my children to this school.

Wilson Hall is an outstanding school with an excellent academic and athletic program.I have two childern who attend the school and both of them have told me that they would not want to ever go to another school. The administation, faculty are amazing. At first I was going to send my children to Wilson Hall for their first few years of school, but after I saw how much they were learning and how they loved the school I decided not to transfer them to a different school. Both my children and I adore the school and would not want them to go anywhere else. Also, both of them play a sport and the intensity of the players and fans is amazing;the students excell in the classroom as well as on the field.Almost every family in the school is a member of the PTO and there is a high level of parent envolvment.

Imagine this...cheerleaders truly are role models, the football team excels not only on the field but more important in the classroom, the headmaster knows every child by name, a parent PTO meeting fills the gym, your child can leave his or her books and personal belongings in and around the campus and they remain there until they realize they forgot it, no locks on the lockers, flowers in pots throughout a park like campus that all the students are proud of, and teachers that instruct academic courses that have every student accepted into a college or university upon graduation! you don't have to imagine it at all...Wilson Hall is the school. It is the very best choice for my child and probably for yours!

My three children graduated from Wilson Hall and I absolutely love the school! My children all received full academic scholarships to college and were more than well prepared. In addition to the outstanding academics, the atmosphere and spirit of the school is second to none. My children all visit the campus and their teachers when they come home to Sumter - they think of it as their second home. I highly recommend the school!

I went to this school for 3 years and hated every minute of it! The students are horrible, the teachers are some of the worst I've ever seen, and just the all around feel of the school was awful. I would never send my kids here, I would choose some of the public schools in the area over this school.

Profile Completeness

ADVANCED

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.
