I am so pleased with the amount of support staff we have at Frierson this year! In addition to the hard-working classroom teachers, we have a Master Reading Teacher, a Reading Coach, a Personalized Reading Coach, an Associate Reading teacher, and a full-time Technology teacher. When visiting the school, it is evident how well these professionals collaborate with the teachers to ensure academic achievement for all students.
Frierson is a hidden gem on Wadmalaw Island in Charleston County School District. The faculty work from dawn to dusk and have the the highest of expectations of the students. I'm impressed with the implementation of rigorous, standards-based instruction that is personalized for students' needs. The students are excited and eager to learn, even when it is challenging. Parents and community members are always welcome, invited to events, and encouraged to voice opinions and needs. There are several community and business partners who assist Frierson's teachers and families in preparing every student for the future.
Ms. Stevens- It is such a blessing to have such an amazing new 5th grade teacher. The students adore her, she demands respect, she protects each and every student, and she instructs like there is no tomorrow! We are so fortunate.
The teachers at Frierson are critical of their own practices and always searching for ways to improve. They are collaborative professionals who are open and receptive to constructive feedback. They are implementing standards-based instruction with the goal of personalizing for all students' needs. It is incredible to watch them in action as they teach such diverse groups of students in one classroom.
Teachers provide rigorous instruction that is at the appropriate level for students, according to pre-assessment data. Therefore, students are always at a challenge level that will require persistence and this trait is highly valued. Problem-solving, both academically and socially, is also taught explicitly and indirectly within the context of instruction.
Respect is one of the most important parts of the school wide Code of Cooperation. Students have created this Code, which is their listing of the most important behaviors they must develop and exhibit in order to reach their larger goals in life, or what we refer to as a Shared Vision.
Teachers work to develop and monitor the growth these traits, part of the Profile of the SC graduate. They role model, use explicit instruction, and class and individual goal setting. The measure traits with rubrics and allow students to self-assess their behavior.
