Well-Loved Books

Dr. Seuss

A parent from Texas writes: "My favorite books are the Dr. Seuss series. My mother had signed me up in a book club, and I received two books in the mail each month. I couldn't wait to read them. I still have the original books, and have read them over and over to my children who are now 14 and 11. My 11-year-old still reads them every now and then. We plan to pass them on to the next generation."

The Cat in the Hat, The Cat in the Hat Comes Back and Little Black, A Pony

A New Hampshire mom of four writes, "The books I remember reading the most - or having read to me - were The Cat in the Hat and The Cat in the Hat Comes Back. I loved horses so Little Black, A Pony was also a favorite. I have three boys and a girl, ages 9, 19, 23 and 30! I have been reading children's literature for a long time! I mostly remember that all the kids loved the funny, silly books of Dr. Seuss and I do still have the worn out copies I read as a child."

Where the Wild Things Are, Good Night Moon, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, The Hobbit

A parent in Washington, D.C., writes, "I loved to read as a child. As I began to type, memories unfold about reading in bed with my mom. My favorite books were the Little Golden books. As a 33-year-old woman, I believe I still have a few packed away. I also have fond memories of reading on my own. Some of my favorite books as a youth (3-12) were:

  • Where the Wild Things Are
  • Good Night Moon
  • The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe
  • The Hobbit

I also liked to read the Archie comic books with my sister. Reading helped to pass the time and was also a great source of joy and amusement for me."

A Wrinkle in Time

A single mom in New York City writes, "I will never forget that book. It was one of the first chapter books I read, and I read it twice, and a third time as an adult. There is a whole series. My son is 7, and I don't know how he will respond to it because he is not ready to read chapter books yet, but we could read it together."

Little House on the Prairie, Nancy Drew, The Hardy Boys

A California mother of three writes, "As a young child, I loved the book, Where the Wild Things Are. My favorite books were the Little House on the Prairie series and Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys. As a young child, I loved the book, Where the Wild Things Are."

"My son is hooked on all of Matt Christopher's books. He writes about sports at mostly the 3rd-5th grade levels. They are quick reads and run (Dirt Bike Mania, Ice Magic, Soccer Halfback, etc...) He has read the Boxcar Children books and other series, but has never been so enthralled in books like he is with Christopher's writings. "
07/26/2007:
"So many wonderful books, I've read them all, purchased Dr. Seuss' Oh the places you'll go for my son for his college graduation! I still have over 40 volumes of 'The Bobbsey Twins' series, loved them. And also The Elsie Dismore books loaned to me by a neighbor who started reading them in the late 1800's. They are still pertinent today."

"Why has no one mentioned my early childhood favorites from England: A.A. Milne's 'Winnie the Pooh' (and others in the series) with the original Ernest Shepard drawings; Graham Greene's 'The Wind in the Willows', with Arthur Rackham or Ernest Shepard illustrations; 'The Tale of Peter Rabbit' and all the other Beatrix Potter books; and Lewis Carroll's 'Alice in Wonderland and 'Through- the Looking Glass', with John Tenniel illustrations. Please, no watered-down Disney illustrations or text. Back in the U.S., let's not forget Curious George, nor the Richard Scarry books. "

"I'm so glad that my favorites--Dr. Seuss books, From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, and A Wrinkle in Time--showed up on your list of most popular books. I was especially happy, though, to see that I'm not the only one who loves Mr. Pine's Purple House. I found a gently used copy on Amazon.com. It's a story about a man who dares to be different than all of his neighbors and, ultimately, teaches them to find their own way, too. Delightful!"
07/19/2007:
"I applaud you most earnestly for a beautiful job with this issue of Great Schools.net This one was very special in both the quality of content and the negotiability and organization of the site. I read many such book recommendations. This one stood out in so many ways. Thank you!"

I'm going on a trip to Corfu, Greece this week as well as other sites and am going to be reading 'My Family & Other Animals' on the plane to Venice, Italy. what about Mama, Do You Love Me. That was a great book that I first heard when I was in ski school at Mammoth lakes, CA "

"My 7 year old is a ' book nut '. New school, Nashville Chrisitan School, especially her teacher, Ms. Ford encouraged reading via the AR program at school. Tara enjoys reading Froggy books and ' Where the Wild Things Are. ' However, this summer she has started to read the MagicTree House series books. "
07/19/2007:
"I had completely forgotten the Frog and Toad books until reading other comments. I have a 7 year old son and he to loves to read, I'm going to have to go to my Mothers house and brave the book shelves as I am 3rd out of 11 there are plenty for me to go through and borrow for the summer remaining! What a great idea! thanks Mid-Missouri MOM"
07/19/2007:
"There are a lot of favorite books here. I am another one of those who had a few rare books. I liked 'The Happy Hollister' Series. I don't remember who wrote them, but they were great and I read them several times. I was also in the DR. Suess Book club as a child and was an avid reader. It was when I was an adult that I discovered his very first book, 'McElligot's Pool' in a stack to old library books that a school was discarding. Needless to say that was a real treasure for me!"
07/19/2007:
"I read my children 'The Monkey King' series. It's a Chinese fairy tale, that included 31 books with large 6 color pictures. It was wonderful. The next series I read for them was 'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. These books stole my older daughter's imagination and started her interest in reading. Later, I bought her Nancy Drew books. She loved them and became a regular, voracious reader. She just graduated from high school, a loves Harry Potter. All great books."

"As a first-grade teacher who hopes to someday be a mother too, I enjoyed reading about others' favorite books. I too was a huge fan of The Bobsey Twins. Go Dog Go and Are You My Mother? were favorites that my parents read to my sister and I many times. I'm always curious about good books to share with students to encourage them to develop a love of reading. "
