Choosing a private school

We are moving to Durham NC this summer from London, England. We are considering private school for our grade 5 son, but one thing I'm confused by is how to rate the academic progress of private schools in the US. In Britain you can get league tables for both public and private schools, but all I can find are report cards for the public schools in NC. I am visiting next week and will check out a few schools, as I realise a visit is what really counts. However, it would be good to know that the school is generally achieving a fairly high standard of academic growth for most of it's students. Can anyone advise me where I might find these kind of figures? thank you.

In the U.S., private schools are not required to take the state standardized tests, so there's no way to compare apples to apples. However, many private schools do take some form of standardized tests and are eager to share results with parents as they tour.

Use the following link: http://www.greatschools.org/find-schools/

Type in your new zip code, and then sort the results for private schools only. You can read parent reviews and narrow down which schools you'd like to tour.

Good luck.
