We are moving to miami from england and i'm having alot of trouble finding a high school for my 14 year old daughter and what high school has to offer. Since its obvious that a high school in america is entirly different than a high school in england, my daughter is very worried about what it will be like and what kind of activities will it offer her. She is very interested in japanese and chinese, will the school have a club for that? We have many questions that we desparetly need to be answered. Would anyone be willing to talk us through it? ThankYou :)
I can't speak to UK high school, but high school in the U.S. typically houses grades 9-12. Many kids study college prep academics with requirements in English, Math, Science, Social Science, PE, Arts, and more; while others focus on career prep along with coursework in English, Math, Science, Social Science, and the like.
Every high school has a variety of electives taken along with the academic subjects. Some times these are language courses. Other students take ceramics, or computer courses. It depends on what the students want to take and which teachers are available to offer it.
After school clubs are another place students broaden their horizons. From service clubs that provide volunteers for community projects, to marching band, sports teams, and indeed cultural and language based clubs.
All of what is offered will depend highly on what school your daughter is enrolled in. And which school she enrolls in will depend heavily on where you move. Most schools are zoned for particular neighborhoods. Some schools offering specialized curriculum allow students to apply there (sometimes based on talent, but often just based on interest), and those schools typically have some sort of application period.
If you're coming for some sort of job, talk to the HR direct and find out what help they can be. Perhaps they can pair your family up with a family currently attending a high school locally who can talk you through a lot of the nuances. Or they might be able to get co-workers to recommend schools based on the academics AND the commute times.
Am an american living in the UK. Have 3 sons aged 8, 12, 14. Depending on the area you are looking at, need to decide if you are going with private, called Public or the State school system. To check indiividual schools, look to Ofsted reports which are quite thorough by area and school. Formal education starts a year earlier in the UK, at 13 (rising 14) in the public school sector most move n the what is called senior school from the Prep School arena. In the state system, this happens at 11 (rising 12). Schools follow set curriculum across the system. The first 3 years of public senior schools are preparing for and taking GCSE exams. After these years, there are 2 final years called Sixth Form which prepare for A levels which the results are used to determine University offers. As far as clubs and activities, these depend on the school. My eldest son is a day boy ie non boarding at a private school. All sorts of languages are offered including Chinese, Japanese, Russian. All students have been taking French since year 3, the age of 7. Many offer music, drama, classics etc. If I can be of any help, let me know. 78090
