Moving to Chicago... selecting High School & Elementary school ?

Jayavanjani April 8, 2013

Hi I am new to US Public education system. We are likely to move to Chicago by the coming school year.I have a High School son and an Elementary son. Kindly help in suggesting which schools are recommended for Both of them. Also are they in the same vicinity, so housing can be arranged... Want to close the school before looking into anything else...

Hi Jayavanjani,

Typically in the U.S., you'll have to secure housing before you choose the schools. While some public school districts allow for your to choose which school your children will attend, you will have to fill out applications and already be a resident in that district to apply.

That being said, you can look for schools that interest you here:

By typing in a zip code near where you're looking, you'll be able to choose from private schools (which you'll pay for) and public school (which are free).. Private schools do not have zones or boundaries like public schools, but they also have application periods, so you'll want to narrow down your search and contact the schools pretty quickly.

Good luck, and let us know what you decide.

Thanks , any recommendation if and why one should choose a private school over public, especially in high school. Our housing will be based on where the children will go. But yes we need to get the paper work done before the move...

The choice between public and private is a personal one. Private schools can cost from $5,000 to $35,000 a year or more. Private schools can be exclusive, can be demanding, and can offer more staff per student. Yet, public schools can be rigorous as well.
