Top 5 Family Travel Tips

Use these tips on your next family vacation.

1. Attitude is everything: Expect problems, go with the flow and everything will work out great.

If you get stressed when you can't find your hotel, your kids will get stressed, too. When you think of it as "exploring the neighborhood," everyone will feel better.

2. Don't forget the little necessities:

  • Bring drugs. Children's Tylenol, Benadryl, cough syrup and Claritin are the basics that Travelwithyourkids.com recommends.
  • Baby wipes are not just for babies. You can use them to wipe toilet seats, hands and faces. They are great on a hot day to cool hot faces, too.
  • Other not-to-be-without useful items: Ziplock bags in different sizes, small packets of laundry detergent and a small sturdy night light (for "turning a scary hotel room into a cozy den.")

3. Leave at the right time.

If you leave at night, especially if you are flying, you might get lucky and have your little one sleep the whole way. No guarantees, however.

4. Be prepared for airplane travel with these tips:

  • Do a little pre-planning. Look at airplane seat diagrams and try to figure out where and in what configuration you want your family to sit — across the aisle or two rows one in front of the other, or would you be better off dividing and conquering to keep fighting siblings apart?
  • Board separately. Send one parent with all the stuff on board first. Keep one parent in the boarding area with a child or children who need to let off steam until the last possible moment.

5. Choose your toys and books wisely.

Don't bring toys that have a lot of loose parts. Bring some favorites that you know will entertain your child for hours and bring a few surprises, preferably a toy or game that you know your child will not be bored with in a short time period. Art supplies and paper are a good fill-in.
