Lakeside Academy is not a school for every child. If your child is not a hard worker they will not excel. If you child has behavioral issues you will have an issue with this school. Marsha Drake leads the school in her own way- to some parents she's off putting BUT she leads by example and hopes that the kids realize her expectation. It works with kids when the parent, teacher, and administration are on the same page. If you are a parent who expects the school to teach your child only -this is not the school for you. You will be involved due to the curriculum. If you feel no one should tell your child what they should and should not do or say -this is not the school for you. Children are expected to follow rules and expectations regardless if the parent says differently at home. If you are quick to tell your child when you don't agree with the story your child told you that you are going to go to the school and "tell the teacher off" without talking to the teachers to find out the whole story - do yourself a favor do not enroll your child in this school. No one expects much from inner city kids but Ms. Drake does and tries to enforce it in the school. She believes in these kids.
Horrible! Horrible! Horrible! Horrible! Horrible! Horrible! Horrible! Horrible! Horrible! Horrible! Horrible! Horrible! Horrible! Horrible! Horrible!
Lakeside Academy is a challenging school for elementary children who want to succeed and go on to a school of higher learning: College or trade school.
My child attended 2 yrs. 2010-11 at Lakeside and it was very disappointing. Mrs. Drake, the principal, is the most rude, unfriendly, sour educator I've ever seen. She may or may not even speak, depending on her mood. So many discipline problems in classroom keep the atmosphere chaotic . School population is mostly low income which resulted in very low parent participation at most events. My child's thirst for learning was snuffed out at this school!. Avoid school at all costs!!
The enviroment that my child is always in to me is a blessing. The teachers are constantly giving the children praises. For every 1 negative thing a child may do the teacher tries and gives them 5 positives.
This school is perfect for your child to go to especially the principals and teachers are very understanding and careing for the children that go to this school
Last year (06/07) my children had a wonderful year and the teachers and administrators could not have been more helpful. This year I removed my child from the school after his teacher proved to be rude to me, unable to maintain discipline in her class. The focus of the school this year seems to be only the topics of the 'no child left behind act' and meeting the state minimums rather than a true well rounded education. My children can now use a computer but know very little about history or language arts. They rarely bring home crafts and the homework is minimal. The math program chosen by the school system as a whole is a sad excuse for a method of teaching math. No instructions are sent home for the parents when they come up with 'creative' methods of teaching. Very frustrating.
Lakeside is a wonderful school. My child has received a very solid education. The teachers are extremely supportive. They positively reinforce the students and encourage them to do their best. I am a proud parent of Lakeside.
Lakeside Academy is a great school. Children are taught important social and behavior skills. They have great science and computer labs that make learning fun. Lakeside also has a great parent workroom that makes volunteering easy. The school has a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. Lakeside Academy is a wonderful magnet school.
Even though this is a magnet school I do not feel that is is any better. The some teachers are very rude. Many student fall through the cracks and are not helped when they have special needs. Basic skills are not taught. Such as reading and math. Instead they focus on computers and science. I believe students are being cheated out of a good educaton. Parents are 'required' to be involved, but this rule is not inforced. Most parents never enter the building.
