Profile Completeness

HONOR ROLL

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

This is our 4th year at CES and we really love it. The teachers have been amazing and the principals responsive to any concern. The PTA tries diligently to get parents involved...that would be my only wish, more consistent parental involvement (though I think that goes beyond just this school and is a universal concern).

Cordova Elementary School is a safe, nurturing, and academically stimulating environment for students. This is my son's first year at Cordova, and we love it. His teacher is wonderful. The optional program and CLUE program keep him busy and challenged. The students are well-behaved. The school principals are very visible and easy to talk to. They put the safety and academic achievement of each child first. I feel safe knowing that my son is there. It is truly a hidden treasure in the Shelby County School system.

My children attended Cordova for one full year and a partial second. Initially it's status as an Optional School sounded promising, though it certainly proved to be less than pleasing. The school environment is very bland. Unimaginative. The teachers seem as lack-luster as the office staff (who frequently look bored). They've embraced Common Core without doing an efficient job at applying it. They assign copious amounts of homework for the low grades and deduct points when it isn't completed properly (though they do a poor job explaining what should be done). There was nothing warm, exciting or proactie about the environment. We were happy to find a better option for our children. I don't recommend this school unless rigorous academics and authoritative teaching is your style.

The fourth grade teachers are so unorganized with their teaching method. I was confused within the first 10 minutes of sitting in on one of the classes. I don't know how in the world the children learn at all.

I love Cordova Elementary! I have a kindergartener and a 4th grader, my children are getting an A++ education! The teachers and staff are fantastic and Mrs. Avanzi is the best principal in SCS. There are many great and exciting things happening at CES!!

I love Cordova Elementary! I have had at least one child in CES since 2005 and the school just gets better every year. Mrs. Avanzi is committed to making CES the best school in Shelby County. She hires nothing but the BEST when it comes to teachers and staff. I know the teachers and administration care about the success of each student that walks through the doors of Cordova Elementary School.

Unorganized. Blame focused. There is no accountability. It's always someone else's fault. Just fix the problems.

I have two children at this school because of the optional program. They offer advanced academics which has provided a challenging curriculum for the students. I think the strength is the strong, positive leadership of the principal, Mrs. Avanzi. Overall, it has been a positive experience. I have found the staff to be responsive and open to involving the parents. I regret that budget cuts in recent years have taken away Spanish classes and some support staff.

Just read the latest review stating this site is being monitored. This is probably true because a crazed control freak runs this school. Ask yourself this: How well do I really know the principal and teachers? I agree, the Kindergarten teachers are great at Cordova, however, the upper grades - not so great. Make a surprise visit, you'll see.

I wrote a negative review this morning, and now it is gone. I was right, someone is monitoring this site to offset and delete negative reviews of Cordova Elementary.

In regards to this most recent posting, I would like to say that while this parent must have had a bad experience with this teacher, I believe all the other accusations to be way off base. The school does not smell, the staff is, for the most part, very nice, and the principal is always present and available to talk to parents. She is also very involved with the children and I'd wager she can name every child in the school! I have had one child or another in CES since 2005, and have been very happy overall.

WE LOVE CORDOVA ELEMENTARY! My son was a student there for K-5 and now my daughter is in 2nd grade. The teachers are wonderful and really care for the students. They hold each student to a high standard of learning and accountability. Mrs. Avanzi is one of the best principals in Memphis City Schools and Shelby County. She works hard to make sure CES is a top school!

In my book the best thing about CES is the leadership. CES has a principal that is not afraid to tell parents the truth and demand that they hold their own kids to a higher standard. I have been very impressed with the education and I am even more impressed with the social standards of this school. This school is an amazing asset for our community whose record speaks for itself as one of the best educational programs in the state. Other schools could learn from watching the way this school is operated.

The principal truly has the children's intrest at heart. This is my first year at CES and all the Kindergaden teachers are amazing and go above and beyond to make sure all the kids are up to par for first grade....Thanks !!

We are lucky enough to have moved into the Cordova Elem. school district. We have been very happy with the school thus far and look forward to next year. My only 'issue' is that there is little in the way of physical activity for the students. PE is not every day. NOt a huge problem, but I did have to take a star away.

My child is in the 4th grade and loves her teachers and all the activities, and I love their curriculum there. She is doing excellent in her reading. She's reading to a seventh grade level. She is also in the C.L.U.E program for above average children. I love Cordova and my daughter does not want to leave next school year.

Cordova Elementary has some great potential if the teachers would be more concerned with their students and Parents. many parents are afraid to voice their opinion about the teachers because of fear what the teacher might do to the child and this is uneceptable. The school itself is great but some of the Teachers are not.

My daughter has been at Cordova Elementary since Kindergarten. She is now in 2nd grade. We have been very pleased with the teachers and the administration. The involvement of parents is such an important part of children's learning experiences and Cordova has great parents that are involved. My only concern is the lack of an art program (Memphis City pulled the funding). Thankfully our PTA has the cultural art program where our children learn art through parent volunteers and artists in the community. The comment that was negative above mine, was obviously made by an uninvolved parent. I want my child to be challenged and Cordova does this. The homework is not too much and these children need an education. These are the people who will be running this country 30 years from now. I am very pleased with Cordova

My son has attended Cordova Elementary school from kindergarten through the 2nd grade. Overall I am very pleased with teachers, curriculum, and school grounds. Cordova has an accelerated reading program that lets each child maximize his reading potential. I have volunteered in the shool during the past three years. In doing so, I have become familiar with most of the teachers from kindergarten through fourth grade. Most of the teachers seem interested in providing a great learning environment and care for their students. The principal, Ms. Avanzi, is excellent. I would trust her judgement in choosing new teachers, etc. Overall, Cordova Elementary. The school is a few years old. All of the facilities are clean and well maintained. Overall, Cordova Elementary is a great option for parents who wish to keep their child in a public shcool around memphis.

I am very disapointed with this school, my child teacher don't seem to understand my need in having answers when I question her. This and some other administrative problems makes this school lack in good reviews. Besides the kids have to much homework and this will only make them hate school. They spend too much time in school already and they should make the most out of it, and not have the child come home and sit down again for another 20 or 30 minutes to do their homework, and some cases even more than an hour. The system is overworking the kids too early in childhood, somethings needs to change, or our society is going to grow more and more stressed. That's the future of our kids, more stress, more work.

I have two children that are attending Cordova Elementary. My son is in the second grade,he comes from a struggling school. He is not on the level he should be on. He has a wonderful and caring teacher who has helped him in every subject. This teacher has helped him come a very long way.
