We chose this school for our son's 6th grade year after researching public, private, and home school coop possibilities. We chose to pay $3,000 in out-of-zone tuition because we felt FIS was the best fit for our child. Now, eight weeks into the school year, we are very pleased with our decision. The principals and vice principals are very approachable as are most of his teachers. Since this is middle school, there is an emphasis on student's personal responsibility. That may come across as a little uncaring from some teachers, but it is a philosophy that is extrememly beneficial for the kids and will enable them to succeed in later grades (and life in general). I could write so many positive things here, but I'm about out of room. To sum up, academics are excellent (honors courses in each subject, strong gifted program), extracurriculars are ample and diverse...A++ school.
Our daughter attended both 5th and 6th grade at Freedom Intermediate. She had 2 exceptional teachers. They went above and beyond her other teachers. I did find the administrative staff to be willing to listen but felt that they really did not incorporate the parents concerns in their decisions concerning some rules especially the dress code. It is a nice idea to treat girls and boys the same but they are not the same ie bodies are different. Guidance, music, art teachers are all great. I do think there should be at least 30 min of PE worked into the daily schedule. Johnson Elementary, the feeder shcool teachers and staff are far superior and much more supportive of students and parents.
My son attended 6th grade at FIS. As is the case with many schools, some teachers excelled at their jobs, while others merely met minimum standards. Luckily, my son had only one teacher that we felt to be below average standards. FIS does not measure up to the quality of the feeder elementary school, Johnson, but the good teachers are truly exceptional.
