Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

The one year I got to go to this school was the best school year I have ever had. My teachers truly cared, and my education was excellent. One particular teacher, Mrs. Mosley of 6th grade, was simply outstanding. She gave college-style lessons and challenging tests while caring about the success of every one of her students and having a good attitude all the way through.

This school cares about their students. The principals seem to be set on making it the best, most comprehensive educational experience possible. E.g., earlier this year (the first day of school, in fact), I sent an email to the principal regarding our bus driver's behavior. She called me within 5 minutes. She "took the bull by the horns", and the following week I was in a meeting with the assistant principal, the director of transportation of Knoxville, and the contractor for the school's bus drivers. The principals took care of the issue as if my child was their own. Complaint: Students' parents are supposed to sign "hold-up cards" every Thursday. These are to ensure parents know of any marks against the child that could result in disciplinary actions like detention. The problem is they have to be signed even if there are no marks against the child. And if they forget, then they get a mark against them. This is crazy. They should only have parents sign cards acknowledging when their child has received a mark of some sort. My child's complaints would be, 1) the pressure she feels from the teachers in her Honors classes, and 2) the pressure in Technology: the typing tests are timed.

If you don't like homework this is not the school for you. I appreciate the fact that they are preparing the children for high school, but this is craziness. This school functions like college. The teachers lecture during class time and work comes home. The children have a five subject notebook to keep up for every class and its checked and part of their grade. They have numerous test every week. My child missed a day of school and the next night we had 26 pages of homework and three test to try to study for. My child has no life now other than homework and school, he had to drop out of all extracurricular activities because of all the work. Principle is very nice and some of the teachers are caring, but be prepared to work and work hard every night.

My daughter is a 7th grader at Bearden but she always talks about how she would love to go to WVMS. Although, we are not zoned for this particular school, therefore she may not transfer. She often tells me how great of a school this is and how far she can go just by going here. I just wish I could transfer her here!

Fantastic school!!! I'm a parent of a 7th grader and we couldn't be more pleased. The new principal is refreshing. He and the teachers excel in their desire to educate the students and their overall success.

If you think having a conference with the teacher would help get your child into a better start, well think again!!! The teachers here in WV not only would not admit their fault but will make your child suffer with humiliation in class and a terrible year!

This school is full of caring and concerned teachers. The parent participation is abundant. I felt my children received a private school education at this wonderful public school.

I'm currently an eight grader at West Valley and so far I have had some really bad and some pretty good teachers. They honestly do not give us any freedom to be kids; we have about three minutes to run around and grab our books before being shuffled into our classrooms. Teachers are very unaccepting of any late work, and they tend to blame every mistake on you. I understand that these teachers are trying to perpare us for high school, but my older brother is in high school, and he seems to be enjoying it a lot more than middle school. We may only be thirteen or fourteen, but I believe we can control ourselves to walk to lunch, go to the bathroom with out having to get a signature, etc. Other students in my grade are mainly holding onto their little cliques. West Valley can definitely improve though.

EVERY teacher is amazing! They give 150%. The administration cares about their children. We can access books online to save our kids' backs from heavy books. The school is CLEAN! And the parents are very involved in addressing needs and problems. PTA money goes toward great technology, etc. I LOVE West Valley Middle!

I have a daughter with special needs and the staff has been very supportive. All of her teachers and the staff have been understanding and have taught my daughter so much. The Assistant Principal has helped not only with academic issues but also social skills. I only hope when my daughter moves on to high school she will receive this type of support.

Curriculum in 8th grade needs to change to mirror high school. Too many classes in one day. If you miss more than three days due to sickness its almost impossible to make up work School population is too large for teachers to remind students of past assignments. Students going on to Bearden will do well. Teachers have more time for students due to block scheduling. I'll be glad when my second child is finally out of this school. WVMS prides its self on organizational skills and homework. High and college are more geared to your test grades not how well you organize your class folders.

I think West Valley is a Great school! I have found the principals to be receptive to my input and have appreciated my participation at school. I have 2 kids there and have experienced over 15 teachers. Most of them are outstanding. They have too much paperwork and responsibilities from the county that have nothing to do with teaching kids....I think they do a great job considering. In response to the PTA Mom's have the kids that make the sports teams----- I haven't seen a team tryout that wasn't decided by an outside, impartial source with the kids usually just wearing a number so no one even knows names. I think these kids get on the teams because they are good at the sport. There is always room for improvement and the staff is human so mistakes happen but I think it's the best middle school in Knoxville!

west valley doesn't prepare it's middle schoolers very well for high school. the teachers there dont pay attention to the positive things the students do, they just bash them for what negitive things they do. my child hates the school, and i can see why, her teachers give the students little independece.

Our daughter has done beautifully in 7th grade due to an exceptional team of teachers. We moved into the zone and she was 1 of 4 from her elementary school. Her 6th grade was okay, but not exceptional. It takes a while to be accepted...at first not as welcoming as should have been. She now loves it and is so happy. Academically challanging, but she has thrived! They offer so many activities, and I believe she will have a jumpstart in high school because of her outstanding academic preparation. Teachers always responded immediately to any questions from parents or students. We just wish we could continue and have her attend West Valley High School!! Finally, the music program has to be the finest in the area....my musician father could not get over the quality of music at the band concerts. Let us build an auditorium to showcase all of these talents!!

There was a change in principals a couple of years ago. We would have to say the change did not disrupt the good attitudes among the faculty from our perspective. Out daughter's team of teachers has a good web link for daily lesson plans and open communication. They will stay after school if there is a need. We have no complaints. The coaches are all quality people and great role models for our kids.

I have found West Valley Middle School to be very much a student oriented school. We have a child that has great difficulty reading with comprehension and the staff of teachers are working in many different avenues to get him to be successful. I rate them an A+ for their efforts. Thank you

WVMS is approaching ten years and it couldn't be in better shape. All of their facilities are probably the best you will ever see in any public schools across knox county. Along with their 8 lane outdoor track there is the Wolves' basketball/volleyball arena seating well over 1250 people. Amazingly, sports aren't the only benefit students will enjoy. WV boasts orchestra, band, jazz band, chorus, and an advanced advanced choral program. The chorus class holds many concerts year round including advanced plays such as : 'Bye Bye Birdie', 'Oklahoma', and 'The Music Man'. Students will also be able to attend dances and school/grade celebrations throughout the year.

Well, i have two children in this school and they both dislike it immensely. Way too strict! middle school students do not need the teacher to walk them down the hall to get to class, or a teacher screaming at them to get to class while they're in-between classes, nor being forced to sit the entire lunch hour in the cafeteria, nor control every aspect of middle school life. There is minimal social time at this school because every minute is monitored. Student don't have an opportunity to be kids and enjoy this middle school experience. West valley does not prepare students to enter high school where rules are minimal and expectations are high and self discipline is a must!

The person who felt that West Valley is an incompetent school needs a wake up call. That person can not and should not expect for his/her child to be held by the hand all day. Of course at the beginning of the school year, there is going to be alot of confusion, especially for the teachers who do not have a certain student on their roster. The school is the best in the county in athletics, academics, music, and art.

West Valley Middle School has been a great experience for both of my children. The administrative staff have been helpful and willing to work with my husband and me and my children in all aspects. For the most part, the teachers are great as well. As with all schools, there are teachers that should not be teaching.

This is the BEST school I have ever attended. The teachers are kind when teaching, and they also make the experience fun. Moving from elementary school to middle school, my percent of increase was over 1000%. The school is always kept clean. They have an amazing music department, which falls in the catagory of a top notch related arts program. If you are into sports, this school is for you; from basketball to golf, our teams are outstanding. If you attend this school you will learn many things while having a wonderful time. I MOST CERTAINLY recommend this school!

I have never been so disappointed. My child entered at the end of the year out of necessity, and has been treated horribly by teachers. As a teacher myself, I am totally disillusioned that professionals would act in such a manner. My child was actually told that there were no desks, so she could 'sit on the floor'. She carried all of her books all day after requesting a locker several times, and only received one at the end of the day when someone finally felt sorry for her. As of her fourth day, she still does not have a schedule, and I have been told that this is 'a busy time of year'. I have made a mistake by moving her, I only wish she did not have to pay for it.
