In the Knox County Schools District, students are assigned to schools based on their residence, but they can also attend in-zone magnets schools or apply to out-of-zone ones; the application period for most schools is in February. The district has a gifted program for elementary school students. It also provides support for inner-city youths and special education services.Under the federal No Child Left Behind law, students attending a Title I school designated as “in need of improvement” have the right to attend a higher-performing school in the district.
