I think that LCHS is a great school. The building is in good condition, the environment is that of a friendly community, and the teachers always care and are willing to help in any way possible. We have a particularly excellent English department. While I wish we had more AP and foreign language classes, I don't find myself severly impaired in the least. Also, the administration truly cares about us students and does everything neccessary to protect us and make school enjoyable. Drug searches, to be frank, are good for our school. The random searches increase the hesitance of students to have drugs with them. Also, while their are class fees, those who cannot afford them can have their fee waivered. The money truly is much less than what is really needed to give students a proper education. Overall, my school is quite superior to many others and I reccommend it.

Lenoir City High School is an excellent school that has a lot to offer to each student. The well being and safety of each student is a priority as it should be. I recommend this school to everyone.

My child is a Freshman this year and loves the experience so far. One thing that I think really helped was joining the band which introduces and intermingles students from all grade levels so incoming Freshmen see some familiar faces on the first day of school. We have been so pleased with Adam Huff, the band director. He is so very talented, and has worked to form a high-class quality marching band. Mr. Huff demands alot of hard work, but he also makes the band experience fun. As for the other academics, we had a recent parent night for Freshmen class and I am sorry to say not many attended. The new Freshman class initiative at the school is a great idea to ease the incoming class into high school life. Most teachers seem to really love their jobs and care about the students. Good experience so far!

Without the help and guidance of Lenoir City my child would have fallen through the cracks. He was an extremely bright student, and an avid athlete, which was recognized and encouraged by the administration - Mr. Sims in particular. Without the guidance and help of these educators I can only wonder what 'might have been.' While I see some parents have commented about the lack of a 'gifted' program, I can only suggest they reevaluate what 'gifted' means. The staff at this high school goes well beyond what is required by any law - FERPA or otherwise - in reaching out to students. It is too bad that not nearly enough parents can recognize the wonderful qualities of this staff, and what it means to a young adult. And that you staff for preparing my son for a full ride scholarship to Georgetown!

As a graduate of LCHS and the parent of a student there I fell that it is a good school. In the day and age I am glad that they watch out for drug use and violence. I have a student-athelte who seems to like this school. The education there is as good as a student decides to make it. Many of the people I went to school with went to college and have done big things with thier lives. Anyone who doesn't think this is a good school hasn't been there in awhile. Security is strong but as a parent I like that. There are good teachers and staff who care about our kids. There are many after-school activities for someone wanting to do them. Again I think this is a good place for and education and this is where my children are going.

LC doesn't provide annual notification to parents as required by FERPA. Students' social security numbers are released illegaly w/o parental permission on the basis that they are directory information. Few staff members appear to know what FERPA is. The school board meets at 11AM when few parents can attend. (Few parents know they can attend.) Parental involvement ISN'T encouraged. Grades are held for unpaid fees(in violation of state law). Random drug tests, lockdowns, dog searches are not keeping athletes and students safe. Only 2 tested positive the first year; 1 admitted to drug use before testing. They've created alienated, humiliated, and frightened students and an atmosphere of distrust. Students aren't being taught to be responsible citizens, they are being taught that they're guilty until proven innocent. Students voluntarily playing sports get the humiliation of random drug testing, like it or not. By usurping parental roles, LCHS is destrying our children's trust.

I believe that the two previous reviews were a little harsh on the subject at hand. In my oppinion Lenoir City High School is a wonderful school with many extracurriclar activities. As for the random drug tests, those are to keep the players and people around safe from harm. The drug searches and lock downs are also a way to keep everyone safe. At least the police aren't holding guns to our heads and asking us to clear out our lockers. The teachers are great and they help if the student needs it. Just last week the guidance counselors stayed out in the hall to discuss students future plans. No we aren't the best school, but we do strive to be great.

If your child is seeking a basic education with no intentions of going on to college, then Lenoir City is the school for them. However, if you have a gifted child who is looking for academically challenging classes and supportive staff, then look somewhere else. Forget about mapping out an academic 4-year plan, because most of the classes will be dropped from the curriculum. There is no gifted program available, even though state law requires it. My advice to any parent who is considering sending a gifted child to Lenoir City High School is to have your child tested for giftedness, get an IEP in place, and let the state help you get a decent education at LCHS. My student succeeded in high school in spite of the faculty and administration, not because of it.

The previous review appears to be from a teacher, which typifies LCHS's police state. I personally heard the athletic director state that they would randomly drug test all students given the chance (ie, if it was legal). Some teachers I have spoken to did not know what FERPA was. No other parents I have spoken to knew. The school never advises parents where the guidelines are posted (on a small bulletin board in the teacher's lounge, you have to ask) as required by law. They provide student-atheletes' SSN's to a third party without parental permission. Frequent 'lockdowns' and drug-dog searches. Each semester parents and students are required to sign a 'contract' for every class which usually has a syllabus with more rules than class content. Free education!? They charge a fee for homeroom! Nearly every class has a fee.

This is a great school with a caring atmosphere. Most of the teachers really care about student achievement and strive to help them succeed. We, like any other school, have our problems, but many teachers, administrators, and other staff members try to help. The culture is not oppressive and FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) regulations are not ignored. The fine arts could use some enhancement. As for parent involvement, we need more of it. I wish I had parents who took an interest in their child's education. We are a great school; the graduates of LCHS are ready and willing to meet new challenges and become productive members of a global society.

About the tests


In 2012-2013 Tennessee used the Gateway/End-of-Course (EOC) exams to test high school students in language arts, math, science, and social studies upon completion of relevant courses. Students must pass the algebra I, English II, and biology I tests, called the Gateway exams, in order to graduate. The Gateway/EOC exams are standards-based tests that measure how well students are mastering specific skills defined by the state of Tennessee. The goal is for all students to score at or above the proficient level.
