Hawkins Mill is on the rise, and continues to move students up! Definitely the best school in Frayser, possibly the best in Memphis. Test scores have risen over the last two years, under the direction of the awesome, new principal, Mr. Antonio Harvey. Teachers are dedicated to helping students and Mr. Harvey dishes out tough love to keep students focused on academics, as well as help them develop into productive citizens. The counselor, Mr. Williams, helps students and parents with anything they need: counseling, school supplies, food, clothing, job applications, and anything else imaginable! I disagree with this site's "1 out of 10" rating. Go to Hawkins Mill and see for yourself, or visit my webpage at www.http://finneyl.weebly.com/ and see what we do every day! Follow us on Twitter (@HMEhawks) and Instagram (hmehawks) to see more! We might just be the best kept secret in Frayser.
Teachers at Hawkins Mill go above and beyond! We now have so many teacher sponsored clubs to enrich student learning: Pom Squad, Newspaper, Safari Art (making art from recycled materials), Jog Club, Cooking Club, Gospel Choir, Music Club (Drums and Recorders), and others I know I've forgotten, but you get the idea!
We have many Level 4 and Level 5 (out of 5)teachers in our building, and test scores are rising, which shows student growth. 3rd, 4th, and 5th Grades performed at Level 5 (out of 5) TVAAS growth on TCAP last year. Proof positive!
We have P.E.A.R.L.S (Preparing Excellent Academic Respectful Leaders)for our young ladies and Young Men of Distinction, and Boys to Men for our young men. These programs are to mentor at risk youth, while at the same time, provide opportunities for growth through enriched life experiences. Our Boys to Men program recently had a day at a ranch (led by our counselor and principal) filled with horses, fishing, and nature to expose these young men to things they do not usually get to do. These students also serve as ambassadors, guides, and servers when guests are in our building. These service skills help students to take pride in helping others, while developing a sense of pride within themselves.
Besides the programs the counselor has, students are guided daily, with positive reinforcements, to strive for excellence. Issues that do arise are handled quickly and fairly to ensure that students know the expectations for a Hawkins Mill Student.
