I am a former student of Mary Hughes. I absolutely loved it, I learned so much that had really helped me through out highschool and college as well. The teachers really know the material and have always been willing to help if i needed. Although when it comes to sports some of the coaches did tend to have favorites when it came to making the team so that i felt was very unfair. Otherwise, I would recommend this school to anyone and everyone. Its safe, good learning environment, and the teachers are awesome.
For the record parents n here have not attended k-8 , and I have never had a problem the teachers not carring they are all great. And as far as academics go teachers do a great job if your kids arent doing a good job its no ones fault but theirs. sincerly Mr. Attractive
I am frustrated with is school. How could a teacher show Sponge Bob during a guidance class. What educational value does this add for our children when they are supposed to be learning how to be good people with morals? The school does not have a caring attitude towards its parents and students.
Being a parent transferring my child from Bluff City to Mary Hughes, I have been very disappointed. My child was making amazing progress in his academics, until we started at Mary Hughes. In almost 2 school years, the only thing my child has learned is through private tutoring. I was actually told by a teacher that it would be best to "give up on this year and hope that he learns next year." I could understand if this was at the end of the year, but this was before the first report card came out. The teachers say that they care, but if your child has any struggle at all, they just give up. I would send my kid to the dog pound to get a better education.
As a parent of two students at MHS that started mid-semester two years ago. I just want to give credit where credit is due. They were very welcomed by students and staff. On an academic note my kids are much improved because of the personal attention given to each student. Thank you for a great experience for students and parents alike.
My daughter and I just moved down here to Piney Flats in July of 2009. She started going to Mary Hughes School in August and she absolutely loves it! The staff and students have welcomed her, and treated her as though she had been there all along. I want to thank Mr. Mason and teachers for everything. Mary Hughes has been GREAT!
Mary hughes is the smallest, but best school in sullivan county for many reasons. Sports are a huge part in kids and teenagers lives.Im in eight grade at mary hughes and i play 3 sports and i love them all. I have wonderful teachers who are very caring and wqhen u see them around the community they stop by and be friendly. Thses parents that have rated it dont go to school here and they shouldnt say its a bad school because they dont go here! mary hughes is the best school in the county! hessman.
We had our son at Mary Hughes School from Kindergarten - 8th grade and he loved it. He loved the teachers. Especially when he got in middle school. His favorite teacher was Mr. Walker. He would come home everyday and always tell us what went on in Mr. Walker's class. He would always say that Mr. Walker made learning fun. As a parent, I know personally how much Mr. Walker cares for his students and how he goes beyond what is required of him to help his students learn. He was our son's baseball coach and he bought our son cleats and a glove because he knew that we couldn't afford it but he knew our son really wanted to play because he loved baseball. The other teachers at Mary Hughes are wonderful also. It is a very family oriented place. Highly recommended!!!!
I found that this school is perfect for our son. It is not over crowded and the teachers there are very family oriented.
I attended Mary Hughes from kindergarden through eighth grade. I had a wonderful experience. It is a small school with huge values on education and community. I will always value my time spent at Mary Hughes. Ashley Slagle Tusa
This school is pretty amazing and i really hope they do not decide to move it because my 6th grader daughter goes and she loves it
This school is like many others in small comunities. Everyone knows everyone else. This can be a great thing, it can also be a hinderance. I am a former student at this school and now have a child of my own going there. Some of the teachers are still the same and this school is exactly the way it was 20 years ago. The staff is very helpful and encouraging. I think there are aspects that could be changed. You could say that about every school. I do see though with my kindergardner that people are not as receptive with those that are a little different. This is parents and students as well.
I think this school has way too much drama for a school this is coming from a middle schooler. The princapals and teachers do play favorites and its unfair. I not going to say its a bad school but its not a good ine either. I would not reccomend this school to children who come during the middle of the year because some of the students are to self involved. And parents will think its a good school because they didnt go there and they dint know how it feels to be left out or alone. And the princapals are aso too self involved to notice things like fight in the hall or to notice the cameras when someone is turning someones lick around. I like my friends here but not the school.
MHS has pros and cons just like any other school. Wonderful staff that really care about their students and a sweet atmosphere to greet your children every day. However, school day is too short and needs to extend to take full advantage of teaching time throughout the year. Academic expectations need to be raised and the tv's need to be taken out of the school because they can be used excessively. A lot of positives about the school, but any school can improve and I hope this school challenges itself each year to avoid the status quo and raise the bar for the students.
I have 2 children, 1attends MHS the other transfered to another sullivan county school, the principal is O.K. The children of the 'well-knowns' are very snooty and outcast children that can't keep up with the 'Jones'!
I like this school. Especially Mr. Mason, and Mr.Johnson, sometimes I get along with some of the students there! But, most of them are not very friendly! I have made many close friends at Mary Hughes. And I am looking foward to my 8th grade year!
I love this school, it was an honor being able to learn her. it was worth it! especially mr. walker, the yankees room! my brother had him and loved him! never wanted to leave. you might know him craig mccoy! he's in his first year of college! he loves it. and i love mary hughes its the bestsest school! I Love This school, I have had many experiences here! As a student at Mary hughes, I apprectiate all of the staff there, The all have great personalities! I have had the whole experiance. From Kindergarden to the 7th grade! It's all just so great! -Samantha Hinds
This school is exellent. As a substitute teacher who goes to many different schools, this one is among the very best! The community is exceptionally involved, and the teachers are spoken very highly of!
This is our first year at Mary Hughes and we absolutely love it. I have two children that attend and they have learned a great deal this year. I believe their academic progress is where it should be along with other schools and the availability of extracurricular activities is also very well diverse. Parent involvement is very high and I believe it is one of many reasons why Mary Hughes is a great school. I look forward to seeing my children grow and excel academically while at Mary Hughes.
