My children have been attending Allan for almost 4 years now, my sonis in high school and started 5th grade at Allan. I was really hesitant about sending my children to public school in a big city, we moved here from Smiley, Texas.; and I have been truelly blessed by the teachers and staff of Allan. I love the office staff who know my children personally and when I call they recognize me as well. It is such a great feeling when i mention whose parent I am and so many people have wonderful things to tell me about my children even the cafeteria staff. So a big thank you to all of those at Allan Elementary.

This school has the hardest working teachers of any I've seen. My children's Pre-K teachers were beyond awesome. Unfortunately, beyond second grade or so, the kids are drilled endlessly for the standardized test. All morning doing reading drills and all afternoon doing math. My kids are too bright to need that. They seem to have to teach to the middle kids - spec ed kids get the bare minimum help and GT kids don't get any support. As I said, every teacher I met seems to put in 100%. The PTA seemed to have great parent involvement. I don't know what the problem is.

Allan offers a variety of extracurricular activities like the Paws after-school has karate, 4-H club, sewing, action threater club, and homework help. There is the Longhorn Neighborhood Club, Longhorn Buddy mentor program, PTA, and volunteer is always available even on weekends for the Allan Garage Sale, Fall and Spring Carnival.

I would like to say that my personal experience at Allan has been a pleasant one. My son is now going to the 3rd grade and we have had no problems with our teachers. Our teachers have been caring and most importantly efficient. we have been fortunate enough to have been in the company of individuals who sincerely care to educate children. If you are new to Austin and aren't sure whether you are comfortable with this school, rest assured that the teachers at Allan Elementary are a good team. These are teachers that have pulled together in adverse and positive situations and have helped children achieve a higher educational status in East Austin. Way to go Allan teachers!

Despite a lack of consistent principal leadership for the last 5 years, the teachers of Allan have worked hard to provide a caring learning environment for their students. I feel the teachers are the strength at this school. They are kind, friendly, committed to their students. My own child had a wonderful kindergarten teacher, Mrs.Taylor. She was highly-organized and had great learning centers for the children. I could see my daughter progressing in her reading and transitional spelling skills. Mrs. Taylor always sent home Wednesday journals to let me know about school news, to let me know about my daughter's behavior, and she included homework packets for me to help my daughter read and write at home. This is a school with lots of needs, but the teachers are the glue that have helped this campus so much.
