I have loved every teacher that my children have had at Patsy Sommer, and Mr. Pratz did a great job. Since he left and Ms Varljen took over it has gone down hill. We have lost several teachers each year because they are not fond of her either. She always has an excuse, and nothing is ever her "fault" . The ratings will go down soon, because all she cares about are the students who are way ahead. I have both kind of students, and she has been a nightmare for the one who struggles a bit. People are talking about petitioning to get rid of her, and I will be the first to sign.
Have been very disappointed with this school and its principal. She says she has an open door, but does not listen to any of our concerns about our child. She doesn't care about any requests that are made and will do things her way regardless what is best for the child.
I personally do not agree with any of these comments. Great staff quite caring and attentive from the moment you walk in to volunteering in class plenty. I had a kinder in Mrs. Kuhn's class and a fifth grader in Mrs. Ruiz class. This school has amazing teachers who have taught my kids a tough curriculum with patience and understanding. The principal addressed an issue with a temporary substitute teacher with great attention and urgency of the matter at hand. She showed exemplary leadership and open communication. As parents, we want someone who cares about the children as much as we do as parents and Sommer has reflected that academically in 2013-2014. Great work! We did not find that in schools in Fairfax County that had reputation for being great schools but lacked in curriculum, teachers being enthusiastic and staff who seemed not to care about kids who got sick or parents who took time from their jobs to volunteer when they could.
The school is great, the principal however....... I hope some things change and they bring back the community ed after school programs, my sons really missed them. My daughter will be going in to kinder and there are not any after school activities for kinder without the community ed.
This school is awesome. My daughter is in Ms. Shreiner's class and it has been such a blessing. I was worried about her slow eating habits, but she thrived in her class academically and eating too. Ms. Shreiner stretched herself and put in a lunch award scheme that worked out really well. There is a lot of positive reinforcement and I see it is a very strong academic and extra-activity oriented school. Extremely impressed.
Coming from a Montessori we knew our kindergartner was ahead of her peers in academics but maybe slacking in her social skills. This school offered us a perfect balance of academics as well as social fun for our daughter. So much so that within one month of joining this school we got admission in another very renowned academically driven school but we stayed with Patsy Sommer. Ms Dyer is very caring, fun and methodical - she has different levels of teaching within the same class. We love her!! The other teachers and staff are also very helpful and both the principal and Vice principal are very approachable and helpful too
There is nothing good to say about this school, except maybe that its pretty.. Mr. Pratz was a great principal, to bad he retired.
The communication between school staff and parents is not so good. The principal is little to no help with any communication or understanding.
I will have to agree with the postings from September 2013 especially about the principal and assistant principal. I do not need to elaborate on them much more. 2011-2012 was not a good year for them either. Mr. Mark Pratz "we miss your leadership"
There are good things going on at this school (plenty of great teachers, great parent involvement), but on balance the negatives outweigh the hype. The principal is new & planning seems to be a huge hurdle. Despite spring enrollment & tremendous growth in the area, anticipating appropriate levels of staffing seem beyond their ability. This results in the last minute hiring of poorly vetted teachers and the retention of a few teachers who should have been fired (kinder Julie Davis being one). That being said, they do have some exceptional teachers - if your child is lucky enough to get one and you play politics well enough to help make that happen. Lack of adequate parking makes parent involvement sometimes challenging, but the affluence and greater education levels of many parents in the community do help to offset some of the problems at Sommer. Lack of classroom space is an issue that has apparently cut into enrichment program availability to the point I've heard some art & science activities have been placed on the chopping block. These are just a few things. Frankly, if you can afford to live in the Eanes ISD, do it. If not, you might consider living in Leander ISD instead.
I love this school! However, I am Def not impressed with the principal. When I spoke with her about an issue last year, I thought she would possibly handle it. This year, I realize it did not happen and I feel she will do things her way and that is the only way. She does not give a feeling of comfort, I feel she just smiles says yes, but totally dismisses the parents concerns. The rest of the staff that I have dealt with are a pleasure. The counselor is wonderful and always smiles. The nurse is super sweet and wonderful. The librarian is new and seems super nice. Librarian assistant, Heather is a delight as well. The parents seem to be really involved and the teachers my son has had so far (along with many others I have met ) are also a delight . For this reason only, I give 4 stars
Potentially over-rated. Lower grades staff is completely hit and miss, from entirely engaging and dedicated to the kids to superficial and downright mean. Curriculum and daily activities are overly intense without any clear benefits. Your child will do a lot but may not learn as much as a slower pace school that adds depth to subjects. Higher grades staff is more uniform with a few exceptions. Principal and Vice-Principal have no clear leadership capabilities and change course on a regular basis. Probalby deserves its "Exemplary" status, but I would recommend looking to England or Leander if the option is there.
The school tends to hire the most in-experienced and the most horrible teachers in Texas. The established teachers are good but every year a bunch of teachers quit and the replacements seem like they were interviewed by the principal in a drive- through setting. Have seen the same thing happening year after year even after the student count went down when a nearby school was built. The new principal is hardly impressive. The so called highly rated RR school district cannot even apply a uniform policy across all its schools and leaves a lot to the discretion of the principal. So far the principal's discretion has been un-impressive. Cant believe greatschools ranks this school as a 10!
I love this school. My son is in KG in Mrs. Stroh's class this year. I am very happy on what he has learned academically in just one year. I agree with one of the comment listed on Mrs. Stroh's capabilities. She is a very good teacher indeed. She does take personal interest in students and keep parents informed. When progress is made to exceed her expectations, she rewards children. This adds positive influence. Like her, there are many great teachers at this school. we love the principal Mrs. Pratz. He is very funny and welcoming. We loved him on the first day at orientation. This school does know how to each kids.
I absolutely love this school. My child is in Ms. Warner's class this year and it has been such a blessing. My child did not attend an academic preschool and I was worried about her being behind. She has thrived in her class/school academically and socially. I also have to agree with a previous review...it is a very nurturing school. The kids are reminded that their actions can encourage or discourage another and being kind is the "Stallion" way. The principal is great! The kids love him. There is a lot of positive reinforcement. I feel it is a very strong academic school (my experience is they DO teach...I am shocked by what my child brings home/learns) and the kids seem very happy there. There are many fun activities the families can participate in as well. Extremely pleaed.
The school consistently hires in-experienced teachers at the lower class levels where good teachers are extremely important. The school district and principal seem to be well aware that the surrounding area is fairly well educated and the students will get good standardized test scores even if the school does not teach anything (same old story - aiming for high test scores instead of teaching) Teachers have no idea what the child is doing during recess time to get an idea of the child's social skills. The teacher turnover rate seems to be very high too. End of the year teacher requests because of learning shortcomings are ignored too. I know this review will probably ding my house price but my Childs education is more important to me than my house price. Also, there is hardly any emphasis given to math at K level. The report cards seem to be bogus and try to show bad grades in the beginning of the school year and then improving over time to show "the school improved your child". One good thing about the school is that they take parental concerns seriously and does not ignore them. But it seems they only do this to make the parents feel good.
This is a awesome school. My son attended this school last year and was in Kindergarten. His class teacher Mrs Stroh was extraordinary. She went out of her way to help my son achieve what he was capable of whether it was reading groups or extra math problems etc. We got great support from all the teachers who were involved in teaching various things like art/craft, music, pe etc. The school has a great library. It also participates in various extra curricular activities that helps give your kid a rounded personality. I cannot wait to see what my son does this year in 1st grade. Love this School.
The parents participation, The library so complete, The use of technology on education, The entusiasm that teachers give to kids on doing different extra curricular activities. The principal so involve of kids, teachers, parents, hepers!
My child was in Ms. Kathryn Warner's Kindergarten class. She is wonderful teacher. I could not have asked for anything more about teacher and school for my child's first year in school and such a pleasant learning experience.
What an outstanding year. My child was in Ms. Erickson's Kindergarten class. She is very well versed in child development and offered my child (and I'm sure every child) an education that met their needs. She is a positive teacher and loved her sense of humor with the children. Patsy Sommer is a great school. It is a great school because of teachers like Ms. Erickson. Thank you Ms. Erickson for making my child's kindergarten year such a positive one! You are just the best!
