I'm looking at Horn with great interest. There have been staffing changes made, but it is difficult to tell the impact of those changes at this time. It's a school with 'good bones', but ultimately there's great room for makeover. High parent involvement. This school should be a great school, but you have to wonder why it is not.
I am extremely pleased with this public school. After moving from an expensive private school, we found the academic level to be equally challenging.
I've had two children attend Horn. When we first moved to the area, I was struck at how much it was just like the public school I attended, 30 years ago. The school has a neighborhood feel, and my children made good friends while they attended. I suspect those students in the G/T program would do well, especially in the 4th and 5th grades. Too much time is lost in 4th and 5th grades dealing with changing of classes and general organization. The 4th and 5th grade staff is not a cohesive team; some of the teachers treat the students harshly - some yell and insult the students. I had a great experience with the K-3 staff. Horn offers 'communications' (creative writing), 'life sports' (like roller skating and kite flying), 'computer', 'art' and 'science lab'.
My children came from a poor-performing charter school and I cannot tell you how wonderful Horn is. I feel that the staff at Horn genuinely loves my kids and there is a real sense of accountability here and a wonderful outpouring of community involvement. I know exactley how my kids are doing in what class and what their grades are at all times. I have also seen a real improvement in their behavior and happiness and I love the fact that they want to go to school and dont want to miss school even if their ill. I feel that the children are exactly where they belong and am so thankful that they go to this school.
This is a great neighborhood school with dedicated teachers and active parent involvement. My child is in first grade, and also went to Kindergarten at Horn. We have had a wonderful experience.
