Pin Oak is an AMAZING school. I am in all Pre-Ap classes, and I never feel challenged. If you want a truly great middle school experience, you should come to POMS.
POMS is highly over-rated. It is the most disorganized school we have ever encountered. You need to visit 4-5 different websites to know what is due for your child. Unless your child is super self-motivated and organized, this is not the right school for your child. I find many of the teachers to be lacking experience and not really caring who drowns in their classroom, in addition to ignoring parent emails. One 7th grade math teacher recently told his class "tell your parents to sue us if they don't like my teaching. They will have to fight the HISD lawyers.", as a form of warning of retaliation for kids who dared to speak up at home about unfair evaluations. If your child has a learning disability, such as ADD, beware of this school. You will find resistance in enforcement of special accomodations. In addition, this school teaches math and science only on alternate days, so it is particularly weak in preparing students in these areas. I addition, what is taught during the year does not reflect what is tested on the STARR exam, making it difficult for the student to pass the test.
Pin Oak makes up for an overall lack of rigor in the classroom in this way: it generally values kids and gives them space to become something worthwhile. There are many activities, almost too many, for kids to choose from - some are academic, some are not. I do think though, that if your kid doesn't step up, sometimes he/she can get lost. Maybe that's everywhere...Finally, they could do more writing!
The students here are unmotivated and the magnet program has some of the worst students here. I was almost accepted into Lanier Middle school and decided to attend the magnet program here. Most students I knew were hard working but they ended up being distracted and their work ethic got worse. The teachers were overall good but the students were unmotivated to learn. I then transferred to Th. Rogers. Students here also have occasional fights.
My son is in his second year at Pin Oak and I am extremely happy with the school. The academics are challenging, the music / art / theater programs are very strong, and there are numerous opportunities to take part in extracurricular activities. We chose Pin Oak over a smaller private middle school because I felt my son would benefit from being a part of the diverse student body there. I am particularly happy with the strong level of communication between my son's "Cluster" teachers and the parents. And to top it off, almost every time I've entered the school office, a student has paused to hold the door open for me. How can you not love that?
I have an 8th grader at Pin Oak and she has loved her three years at Pin Oak. Susan Monaghan, the Principal of Pin Oak for the last 3 years and her administrative are advocates for the children. They are there to help create a school environment that is safe and conducive to education. Although the school is a language magnet, they carve out in their budget an award winning fine arts program and athletics program. Pin Oak has won many awards for academics but for me as a parent, I know that my child comes will succeed in her high school career because her preparation through Pin Oak.
I have twin daughters in 7th grade at Pin Oak and we LOVE it. Though Pin Oak has 1200+ students, it feels very small; my children's teachers and principals know them by name. The girls are academically challenged, yet still have plenty of time (and are encouraged) to participate in extracurricular activities. And the kids who go to school with them are a diverse yet motivated group. All in all, I can't imagine how anyone could have a better middle school experience. I worried about the transition from elementary school to middle school, but at Pin Oak it has been seamless, and the administration at Pin Oak works very had to make that so. I can't say enough about the responsiveness of the Pin Oak faculty and staff; if there is a problem, they address it. If you have a concern, they respond. From the principal on down to the police officer that HISD mandates be present in each middle school, Pin Oak is concerned with the academic and social development of your child. It is a wonderful place.
Both of our children have had a great experience at Pin Oak. Both the house principal and the principal know both the girls and us by name. The diversity of the student body has been a true blessing and the school is filled with parents who care. The academic environment has been plenty challenging and, in particular, their math opportunities (including algebra in the seventh grade) have been exceptional. It is hard to see how an HISD middle school experience can be better.
POMS is totally over rated! By far the worst school we've attended thus far. If you are in with the right group your experience may differ. However, it's very political and all about who's who! If your child isn't already way above average don't waste your time some of the teachers only become interested in your child's success during testing! The new principal is a joke! Should have gone to Pershing where we are zoned! Note to future middle school parents: Stop wasting your time trying to get your foot in at pin oak! It's honestly not as great as you think!
The WORST school I Have Ever Been too !! The Students there are snobby..and act like they run the school....The Staff is VERY rude..I Will never go back there again and I Hope whoever reads this knows not to make the biggest mistake that I Made which is going to pin oak
I have never felt so UNWELCOME in all my life as I did at Pin Oak Middle School. That place is uninviting, and the staff I encountered was RUDE!!!! Two big thumbs down on this HORRIBLE school. Send your students to Johnston MS. At least they are friendly and welcoming!
I am a future student of Pin Oak Middle School.I'm going to Pin Oak this fall for 7th grade and I got accepted into the Magnet program,I live no where near the school. As soon as I first walked in I felt welcome. The teachers and students that I met on the tour were so nice and polite to me.It's a big school but,I has a small school feeling to it.It has everything that I want to do,theatre, choir, guitar, soccer, etc. It's like the school i've dreamed of going to all of my life!!
I am a student in 6A. i like the circuliums but the classes are challenging . the home work is ok ( sometimes hard but mostly easy) All parents if your reading this i used to be a B-C student but thanks to the help of pin oak i am now an A-B student. I would highly recommended this highly impressive school
New this year; unfortunately, we lost the super awesome principal, Mr. McDonnough to another school, but have confidence we'll get another good one. In the meantime, Ms. Simsen is doing a great job as interim. The house principals & Ms. Simsen are supportive and caring. There is small-school feel due to grade level clusters. You are able to get to know their teachers. Organization & time management (getting work completed on time) is a challenge after elementary school. However, Pin Oak offers so many ways to help & actually keeps track of students far better than one would expect given the number of students for which each teacher is responsible. Lots of extra-curricular activities are offered. Students are encouraged to form their own clubs, if they have a particular interest. PTO is active and welcoming. I would highly recommend Pin Oak.
Wonderful teachers and wonderful staff. I am very happy with Pin Oak MS. They are #1
This is a model school. I am proud that my kids go to this amazing school.
I love the teachers, the administration, the way the kids get involved and how happy they are to go to school. I love that the kids are very inclusive and that the kids learn through projects and not just through book learning.
