I went to Steele when it first opened. i loved it. The school has grown a lot since then and i the kids now have the opportunity to take really cool classes like Business Law and other career specialty classes that weren't offered when i was a student. The teachers for the most part are involved and caring in a way i didn't experience at my other high school. My sister is starting there in the fall and i am very excited to have her attending such a wonderful school that has so much to offer.
Having grown up in the military and now serving in the military I have been associated with schools as student/parent at 10 different locations...SCUCISD and Steele are the best. There are many things to do at the school from sports (Texas High School Football...nuff said) to Academics (tons of AP classes), to Air Force JROTC (Distinguished Unit) to Band (awesome)....the list goes on. The community is great and I highly recommend SCUCISD.
I think this school has excellent opportunities for students if they chose to participate. My daughter did well, but could have stayed in all the AP classes and done even better. That was her mistake. The only problem I ever had with this school was with one of the teachers who teaches journalism and year book. I was shocked at my daughter's graduation to see all the students with over 100 hs averages. If your kid is either good at academics or sports they can excell here. My daughter graduated with a high B and didn't study much. Still, compated to most public schools, this school is way above average. No gang fights and other nonsense.
Steele is a good school, my son is a senior and is doing well there. I do however have a problem with the emphasis that is put on football, and for that matter athletics. There is definite favoritism going on with the "popular" kids getting priority no matter their grades, or behavior. The basketball coaching staff are very unforgiving of the less popular kids and all forgiving of the popular. Coach Hubbard & Coach Mitchell haven't got a clue, they do not appear to striving for excellence just participation.
As a student that just graduated it's a great school. The teaching staff is incredible particularly the social studies, english, fine arts and upper level math teachers. The only problems that I ever ran into were because of the sheer amount of students at the school. The number can result in a sometimes overwhelmed counseling staff, but even still they make sure to get you what you need. Mrs. Vann, while tough, is a fantastic teacher to have and will set you up for multiple courses thoughout your high school career. Mrs. Pape, Ms. Vargas, and Mrs. Stadtmueller; some of the best teachers you'll find. They're all three extremely supportive, try your best to get them. Mr. Kaeser, quite possibly the coolest/most interesting teacher I've ever had. While some didn't enjoy his teaching method for AP/Dual Credit gov't and economics it's a very succesful method. It's a really awesome school.
Steele is a lot of things, as i will explain. The military base is right down the road from the school, and i would say 98% of the people (Students and Teachers) have some affiliation with the military. This makes for a VERY competitive atmosphere. The top ten for the class of 2012 is finished at about a 98, and with a number 1 of about 105. Take all the pre-ap and AP classes, this is where the good kids are, and the behavior problems are few and far between. I like the extracurricular side of the school too. Steele is dominating in all their clubs and organizations including a state winning band, nationally recognized ROTC program, phenomenal sports teams, mainly football, volleyball, and GIRLS basketball. Do not get involved with the administration including the principle and vice principals! GO KNIGHTS!
My child has attended Byron P. Steele High School for four years. I have to say the staff gives its students hands-on assistance whenever needed and offers personalized attention to each student. It's a big, modern school with a very diverse student body. There are so many academic and extracurricular programs from which to choose. My kids have loved attending Steele, and we are very happy they were able to attend such a fine school.
This school might look good on the outside, but its teachers and standards are below par. Although Steele does excel in sports, they place way too much emphasis on their sports and not nearly enough on academics. The school may look nice, but it is extremely overcrowded, it's supposed to hold 1500 students and it has 2200 students, and it continues to grow. My daughter became distressed when she didn't feel like she was getting any attention from the teachers, and certain programs are underfunded and overlooked.
Steele is an amazing school and I love every minute of attending it! I think that the teachers do an excellent job of teaching, the staff is great, and the extracurricular activities are very successful! :) And whoever that was that talked about underwater basket weaving, I'm in band too and kudos to you :D.
Steele High School has offered everything my children need as far as learning environment and extracurricular activities. The band has played at Carnegie Hall and the Sugar Bowl. The staff is friendly and helpful. Go Knights!
