We are in the process of rising from the ashes and have been able to make some incredible strides in a very short time. Currently we have identified our low performing students through a variety of short term and long term assessments. Bubble and At-Risk students were assigned math and/or reading improvement classes to supplement their core classes. Then after further assessment were identified for additional pull-out tutorials with a 1:4 ratio, and finally, after the second benchmarks of the year we'll have mandatory after-school tutorials that focus on problem TEKS for the last 6 weeks prior to the state assessments. Though we are in our RtI infancy we have been able to make some significant strides of .5 to 1.5 grade level increases in less than 5 months!

One of the main reasons that this school has been found to be unsatisfactory by the State of Texas is: no matter how many times a student demonstrates bad behavior, they are never disciplined according to the very discipline plan this school (district) has written and claims to uphold. In short, the school is not only run by the students, it is run by the students with long histories of discipline problems. The principal and vice principal habitually take the student's or parent's side against the teachers - destroying teacher morale and causing a great amount of teacher turnover (some teachers even break their contracts to get away).

This is one of the finest schools I've ever taught, and I've taught in city schools & suburban schools, and a military overseas school. Yes, the pay is low, but the quality of the teachers and administration here is among the finest as it's like a family and the students are like 'our' kids. A great place for students.

About the tests


In 2012-2013, the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) was used to test students in reading and math in grades 3 through 8; in writing in grades 4 and 7; in science in grades 5 and 8; in social studies in grade 8; and end-of-course assessments for English I, II, and II, Algebra I and II, biology and US History. STAAR is a standards-based test, which means it measures how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of Texas. The goal is for all students to score at or above the state standard.

The different student groups are identified by the Texas Education Agency; if there are a small number of students in a particular group, the state doesn't report data for that group.
