My child attends Evans. I am very impressed with how his academics are coming up and the extra help he receives from the general ed classroom teacher and also the resource classroom staff. He has a new confidence that we have not seen in years. He is doing so well. Because the turnover rate of the students are so high I think that the staff could only use one word of advice and that is to make sure those children and their parents need extra care when notices are being sent home. Often the parents are under much stress with their living situation. Many of the children live in area shelters and often many of the agencies(shelters)are unkind to the families. So I think that the staff could use a some workshops or in-services on homelessness and the affects on the children.
I am an educator at Evans Elementary and am very pleased with the overall schools performance. Although the school is not recognized yet rated as acceptable it is not because of the quality of teachers teaching here. The teachers are extremely dedicated to student achievement as well as student success not only while in the classroom but at recess or the cafeteria social skills are constantly reinforced. It is refreshing to see a group of professionals who have one goal in mind, that being, student success and a 'yes, my students can and will learn' attitude. It is important to note that this schools mobility rate is 96.5 thus they come and go here at Evans. However the teachers do not take up the attitude that they are only temporaries rather they teacher as if the kids were going to be in their classrooms for the next few years. Lastly, I would like to write that it is also impressive to see all of the teachers whether they teach first or fifth grade, knowing all of the students in the school as do the students know each other through the grade levels. It is a wonderful community of teachers, parents and students. This of course has a great deal to do with the principal's positive, can do attitude. She gives room for grievances at faculty meetings and enphasizes that she will not tolerate whispered water fountain grievances. It takes true dedication, leadership and profesionalism to get an entire staff of teachers to work well together for student success. I would certainly send my son to Evans Elementary when he becomes of age to go.
