We just moved here from Plainfield, IL. My boys ages 7 and 9 love Woodlawn. They are happy with all the staff and teachers. This school offers so many extra curricular activities. They are enjoying and taking full advanrage of this opportunity. Up north they had to wait untill Jr. HS (middle school) for this. So far they have great grades and I am waiting to see if they are at tje same level as up north or if the school system is easier here. One child has an IEP/ARD. When we registeted for school we were set up right away and he was up and running the first week of school! Way to go Woodlawn!
My son attends Woodlawn Elementary and is in Kindergarten. I have been nothing but disappointed with the school and its policies. I volunteered for room mother, but "they don't do room mothers". The kindergarteners will take only one field trip this year, but the parents aren't allowed to go. No explanation was given. The art and music programs were shut down three weeks into the school year. Recess was taken away two months into the school year. This school has an open campus and they allow students (including kindergarteners) to pair up with a walking buddy and run errands for the teachers because they have no aids. This school is in a horrible neighborhood and it terrifies me that it lacks supervision. At lunch time teachers from all grades drop off their students (8 classes) in the cafeteria to be supervised by 2 to 3 adult monitors such as a principal or staff member while they eat in the teachers lounge. The kindergarten teachers act like they hate their jobs and have absolutely no patience with the children. Our teacher has been absent more times than I can count and once left early and put her class of 18 in with a neighboring class for the rest of the day!
