Coupland School, home of the Cowboys and many area schools' valedictorians, is an awesome place to educate and raise your kids. My son attended Coupland for all 9 years, and he has an excellent foundation in many areas of his life. He continues to thrive in an area high school and is involved in many activities and has made many friends. He is a success. In Coupland he was a starter on all of the sports teams, an honors student, a leader in Student Council, and placed in many of the U.I.L. academic events. His personable and highly qualified teachers fostered learning, independence, and brought challenges to him to help him face the world. Mr. Chandler, the superintendent and principal (how often do you have that?), was a mentor to him and continues to be an encourager in his endeavors. Coupland is not for everyone, but for some, like my son, it has been the environment and community that he needed for success in all areas and academic readiness.
Sadly I have found Coupland not to be all they claim to be. And in reality are no better than Elgin or surrounding ISDs for that matter. 1st off for Coupland being a smaller nit school with the ability to give each student a better 1 on 1 per as there website claims its not so true. 2nd there is no parent/ teacher communication what so ever! So if you as a parent dont initiate a parent/ teacher conference, so that you can stay on board, don't count on having 1. They will let them go all yr failing, with no attempt to try and correct the situation, by contacting the parents. Sadly they see no need for these. You will only see how good/ bad your child is doing by waiting for a progress/ report card.
Coupland school is great. Thank God this school is not up to par with the other schools in the area because it is above them. One look at the test scores shows where they are academically. The students are given attention that can't be bought, with a class size of 14. (8th grade) The teachers actually seem to (dare I say it) love their job. The teachers have taken a child who doesn't like school got her to enjoy school. This was after teachers in another school had her convinced she was stupid and pegged her as bad student. She excelled in the TAKS math test. Her attitude is so much better, she is more confident. A child with a solid base in reading, writing and math, will not be limited to what this child can learn and will be able to learn on their own. My only regret is that I didn t transfer my children to Coupland school years ago.
Quality of academic programs - not up to par with other area schools. Music, art, sports, other - not very good. Music is done by a volunteer teacher, not a music teacher, sports are not anywhere near what other schools have. 7th and 8th grade boys still play flag football! Parent involvement was pretty good the last time I was there. Possibly more so than other larger schools.
Coupland is a great school for the younger students. Once they get into middle school they do not offer much in the way of extracurricular activities and sports. The small town atmosphere is nice, you can really get involved in your childs education.
Coupland is an excellent environment for younger students. In past years, the educational opportunities it offered to its junior high age students were pathetic at best. Despite the fact that it offered committed teachers, there was virtually no advanced curriuculum for students as they grew into junior high, where college bound students need to begin to start studying harder and beefing up their resumes. Since my attendance there, this problem has been fixed, and Coupland offers team sports, a more advanced mathematics curriculum, foreign lanugages, and music. Where I felt as though I had to 'catch up' if I wanted to make a serious application to a top tier university, my younger sister started out on the right track. She started out ahead of her high school peers, and won't have to double up on advanced math classes to have a college-acceptible transcript.
