James Bowie was the worst school my children have ever attended. The front office staff is rude and ineffective. Anytime, I had to communicate with them, no one was ever able to be helpful and always provided conflicting information. Student records were requested from a school that my children never attended. There were three bright spots a male 4th grade teacher, the second grade teachers as well as Ms. Dennis who teaches 3rd grade and of course the nurse who proved to be the most helpful. The assistant principal is the rudest most unprofessional administrator that I have ever encountered.... if you are thinking about enrolling your children in this school I would consider anywhere else but here.
The teachers work hard for the students. Many of the teachers can speak both english and spanish which is awesome to help the kids feel at home. The work environment for the teachers is great. I love the variety of after school options for the students as well. It is a very supportive environment for all!
This school has a sweet spirit. Children are the number 1 priority here. I think that students, teachers, and staff in general have pride in this environment. Students here are respectful. The principals are very positive. This is my first experience working in Oak Cliff and this school makes me like Oak Cliff. The coach at this school has taught me how to maximize every opportunity to provide donated charitable goods to my students. I think like any other school students should expect to work hard here, be challenged, and do their best.
Bowie is not a healthy environment in which to work. I have witnessed the principal yelling at employees. She is ineffective with parents. The office staff can be rude to parents. There are some good teachers. The building itself needs a lot of work and is not particularly safe. Students must go in and out of buildings and doors are not always secure. A man broke in and stole things at the end of the school day last year, while children and staff were present. The TA's have most of the power at the school. Parents need to make friends with them. The principal allows them to make their own decisions. Standardized testing is ALL that is talked about, worried about, etc. There are no "fun" things, like school programs or plays. The poor environment trickles down from the superintendent...............all the way down. Seriously consider another school if possible.
Bowie is a great place for students to learn and only getting better. Teachers are dedicated, innovative, and conscientious about helping every student succeed. Office, staff, and administration support that effort. This year, come see our classrooms and extracurricular clubs.
Love this school. Great place to work. Principal is very supportive. Staff is always willing to try new ideas and keep up with the latest trends in education. Staff turnover is very low going into 2014-2015 year. Awesome 5th grade team. Look forward to next year. Great things are going to happen. Our students are going to grow.
Most of the staff's first year working together, great job building team support. Working environment is great, both with students and staff. The support you receive by academic coaches and administrative staff is awesome. Looking forward to next year since so many good things are coming.
This is a great school with the exception of the school staff. Two of my oldest kids came out of this school so I did have a better opionio then. Most parents have moved thier kids to a different school because of the new rules implamented within the last years. Parents are not given the opportunity to express themselves in order to make a change since most of them are hispanic. Safety is another issue that I think is being underlooked at. Teachers are coming and going so are students and any parent can support this.
This school is run very poorly. There is a lack of extracurricular activities and there are virtually no field trips for the younger kids. The teachers are good, but a lot of them have been leaving lately. The school is completely focused on the TAKS test.
I am very disappointed with James Bowie Elementary. TAKS scores are all the school cares about, and the scores are abysmal. The school has very limited funds for field trips. I will move just to get my kids into a better school.
