School Official Point of View

Coming from private education K-8, the Woodrow experience has been amazing. Woodrow's IB program is allowing kids to excel in liberal arts, the STEM academy is accredited with PLTW, the premier STEM program, The Business academy is NAF certified, and the CAPA academy is famous for it's long tradition of the annual broadway musicals. The majority of the students are living under the poverty line, yet the school's results are the best in Dallas ISD for a 'choice' school (aka non-magnet).

Teachers are at the college level, for the most part. IB training is part of this.

Very rigorous and challenging programs - in fact Woodrow has made the Washington Post national rankings for many years.

It has a long tradition of such traits. Some of the faculty are alums who ensure this.

Amount of homework: Just right

Most of the homework can be done in class, The projects students are given are handed out well in advance, allowing students time to complete them without burning the midnight oil.

Woodrow appears to be on the comeback. The boosterism is very encouraging. As a former student I'm heartened by all the good things going on. While the press Woodrow gets these days is very positive I'd warn against believing the school doesn't have a lot of ground to still cover in the quest to become a top tier public high school. Continued community and parental support will always be needed to ensure Woodrow meets the ideals that are being thrown out. An IB program is great but the rest of the school needs to follow suit so that the experience of a great HS isn't just the purview of the top of the class. I fear there's a cocoon of "everything's fine" that isn't yet warranted. I base my comments after seeing what other competitive suburban schools are offering.

The worst school in discipline. This school prides itself with tradition however student discipline is not applied fairly to all students. You see students skipping all day without consequence. The principal has the worst attitude with parents. Some teachers don't care. If you are not the right color, I guarantee you, your child will be treated as a second class citizen.

Woodrow is a fantastic HS with a very unique blend of students. Not only do kids get great education, have dedicated, enthusiastic teachers, and a great administration, they also learn about life. All students are welcomed, accepted and encouraged to achieve. I highly recommend this school.

Woodrow has always been a good school but its trajectory has dramatically soared in the last few years after IB accreditation and redesign into four college prep academies. Students from all over the Dallas area apply for transfer into these programs. While not technically a magnet school, it has the atmosphere an elements of one. In addition it offers successful athletic teams and a full slate of extracurricular activities which the magnets do not possess. In addition it has a huge network of famous alumni who treat each other as family. Woodrow is celebrating 85 years and has history, traditions and pride. These are things you cannot find at other high schools. The involvement of the community and alumni is stunning. While being historic (and one of the most beautiful buildings I have ever seen) the school also has been renovated completely and has a new $14 million science and arts wing, complete with a black box theater to house the school's famous theater program. Don't be discouraged by those who denigrate this as a DISD school - do your homework and check it out.
