The Science and Engineering Magnet (SEM) at Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center is a great school. This is my sophomore year in high school, and this is my second year to attend this magnet school. The work is plenty and keeps me very busy. Somehow I manage to get done with the work and play sports with friends from my home school at Seagoville High. That is the only thing that I dislike about Townview is that they do not have any sports. Instead they focus more on academics and clubs such as the chess club and debate team. The band here is excellent. They perform every year at the Adolphous Childrens Parade. SEM has been awarded with the #1 high school in Texas and the 16th best school in the nation. I am very proud and honored to consider myself a student at Townview SEM.
The SEM's markets is better than the other Magnet, So we send our son to the SEM. Challenging curriculum and principal dedicated to school and its mission. The SEM students excel because of their above average quality, so I just want to say that SEM is excellent overall.
SEM doesn't need the Trek or any of that nonsense for bonding. SEM is for rigorous learning. There is really no sugarcoating here.
When the principal was marketing this school to my family, he constantly said that they were better than the TAG magnet. My daughter decided her sophomore year that she didn't want to be an engineer, and it was very difficult for her to find challenging classes. That being said, this is an excellent school, and second best in the district - but the gap between TAG and SEM is quite large.
The Science and Engineering Magnet markets a lot better than the Talented and Gifted Magnet, but we wish we had sent our son to the TAG Magnet instead. Not that it's a bad school, but the program at TAG is just better overall.
Challenging curriculum, principal dedicated to school and its mission. Most importantly, he is demanding of and compassionate toward his students. He never seems to forget why good teachers go into the classroom. The SEM students excel becauseof their above average quality, but as likely because Mr. White does not give up on his students. Just does not occur to him that the teens cannot achieve whatever they set out to do. In a society where teenagers too often are viewed with suspicion and distaste even by educators, the faith and belief SEM principal Richard White demonstrates toward his students almost makes one believe that there is hope for public education. And in our future as well.
