This review is limited to the Magnet Program offered for the 4th and 5th Grade. TEACHERS In 2012-13, the program had excellent (albeit overworked) teachers. There was a staffing shortage that went unfilled the entire school year, but the teachers made the best of it. In 2013-14, the staffing shortage intensified as one of the most successful teachers left the school and the replacement struggled to keep the same pace. A permanent substitute was brought in to cover two other subjects and the overall quality of instruction has suffered noticeably. PRINCIPAL LEADERSHIP In our experience over two years, we have not found the principle to be the most responsive in response to parental questions or concerns. Staffing problems have really hurt this school in the past two years. PARENT INVOLVEMENT This school has a standing policy that parents are not allowed to observe classroom instruction. Many magnet programs and a majority of respectable charter schools require parents to occasionally visit the class. The PTA is ineffective and lacks leadership. EXTRAS Free after-school program is right across the street. School is a partner school for Future Leaders Program.
I went to this school in Elementary and recieved the best education possible. This school taught me so much in life. Not only in academics, but also self pride, and leadership. I was very fortunate! If I have children and the school is still standing, then my children will be attending this amazing school! :)
I went to this school when I was in the 5th grade. I had the best teacher in the whole world,Mrs.Moss. If she is still a teacher, please let me know. I loved this school. I am now 34 years old and remember, J.P. Starks was the best elementary school I've ever attended. I learned a lot and had great memories.
