My daughter is in kindergarten attending a school with a low minority ratio. Two boys told her she was a Nigger. What type of action should be taken by the school? I am handling it as well as I can. This is my first and only child. I do not even want my child in the same class with the kids
I'm sorry this took place. Most schools have a written anti-bullying policy, and it should include all forms (verbal, physical, emotional, etc.) The policy should be posted on the district website or in a parent handbook. Unfortunately, if no adults were around to witness what happened, it could become a "he said, she said" situation (that often happens with kids, no matter what the incident, where the bullys deny doing something or say the other person provoked it.) If I were you, I'd document what happened in a written letter to the principal, with a copy to the teacher, stating all the facts as best you know them (when and where it happened, who was involved, etc.) If the boys who insulted your daughter are in her class, you might request that they be seated away from your daughter, and from each other. You might also suggest that diversity education be shared with the class. I wish I could say there was a "magic pill" that could convince people to look at the things we share in common, not on our differences, but instead I would try to tell your daughter not to follow their poor example by grouping all people of any kind together. If she looks at people as individuals, she'll find some people to avoid, but many more good-hearted friends of all colors and shapes and sizes as she goes through life.34239
