Okay I have to say after reading the reviews last year for this school I had my reservations about weather or not I wanted to send my 6 yr old to school here.I took a shot in the dark and rolled with it.SHE LOVED IT!!She took to her teacher better than she did any other teacher she had had so far ,granted she had attended pre-k before attending hughey but still amazingly enough she go though kindergarten with out being bully teased or any serious matter this last year. Her teacher was very attentive to how she did in class(class size of about 20-22). Any time they had an upcoming event I received a note from the teacher , homework 4 days a week , she loved it like I said.Im however am not a fan of some of the other children that attend this school , just the lack of respect for another.
Wow! I can't believe Hughey received a rating of 4 because it should be MUCH LOWER. This is the most ghetto school my children ever attended. The only reason we sent them was because of the convenience (being so close to Corigador housing). With the number of military families moving to this area one would think this school would raise it's standards. At the time my children attended Hughey, the PTA board consisted of only 3 women. They are quick to ask for volunteers but don't want anyone else to be an actual member of the PTA board which consists of 14 slots. I can't deny that there are some awesome teachers there and the Assistant Principal rocks but this school needs a lot of improvements internally as well as externally. There is a military liason and she's really nice but hardly around.I took my children out and left running!
Scary to know my son could go missing and I would not know until I picked him up. I kept him home from school one day because he was sick, but there was no call advising me that my son has not been there. I'm from California and a school with the same rating called me within an hour that my son was not accounted for. I wish they would take safety more seriously.
Poor care, Poor supervision. My child attended two months till I pulled her out. I volunteered 3 days out of a week. Was told by PTA president that they needed help even though they hadnt rec'd my background check yet. The kinders play ground in old with chipping paint, glass bottle pieces found in the sand, one supervising approx. 45 kids at a time. I caught two kinder kids walking out of the schl front doors. These doors stay open all day. Many times office door was closed and no one seeing who co,e into the school. I walked around without a visitor pin before I was even volunteering. Where is the school safety?? You live in a part of Officier housing you are assigned to this school.
Hi! My two nephews go to Hughey, and I am very very close to them. I feel that my special needs nephew received his services last year(07-08), but in the previous school year he did not by any means. The teacher pretty much gave up on him. My other nephew has done very well and is a star within his grade level. As I have helped them with their homework many times, I wish there was some consistency among teachers/grades. One year they had a homework packet which was too hard for second-it was due on fridays- and the next year daily homework. The assistant principal seems to know the students far better than the assistant principal at my school.
Hello Hughey Parents! My comment is about the appearance and the security of the school. The custodian s work is poor, the bathrooms are out of paper and some of the faucets are broken. The children s health is important. As well the windows, front door glass, etc. About security, every day at dismissal time, is a chaos. Many parents do not respect the signs. Besides some pick up their children not at the front door where is secure. Please help us to make it better!
As a single parent who resides in Wisconsin, I was welcomed into my son's classroom by Mrs. Underwood while I was in El Paso. What an awesome experience! Mrs. Underwood has made herself available for phone conferences and has provided me with excellent feedback. Also, the office personnel has been very helpful to me, especially Irma. When requested, I have been sent my son's report card in a timely manner. However, I am a little concerned about the security of the school and the number of parents and others who were able to enter the school and were able to proceed past the school's entryway. I'd like to see this managed a little more tightly. I want to thank my son's teacher, Irma and the rest of the office staff, and Mr. Vasquez for making my visit such a positive experience.
If you are in the military and you have a child that has special needs do not put your child in this school. This school does not care about your special needs child, the teachers will not follow the IEP if your child has one, the teachers are not understanding to your child's needs, the principal and the assistant principal are the worst. They will not take care of any issues or concerns you have. The front office staff is the rudest I have ever encountered. As a military family member you will not get any support from this school.
My daughter really likes this school. But I as a parent do not. The reason is that the school does not inform the parent when anything is going on like holiday parties or no school for the holidays. I think that the school should send home reminders to all the parents of each student. Also I feel that each student should also have a homework assignment notebook it makes it a lot easier for parents and teachers to communacate with eachother also it would make it easier for parents to know what kind of homework there child has for the day or the week
Excellent special ed department! Regular ed teachers are wonderful as well! I recommend this school above all other EPISD schools. Great staff!
My experience with the EPISD in past was not good until I came across with Hughey Elementary. It must have the best in staff around. My children never experienced such caring teachers and staff until they came across with Hughey. I miss the staff there and the teachers that had given my kids such emotional stability within the EPISD. My kids and I will never forget the friends we met there.
