INTERMEDIATE

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

I am a student. I am in the class of 2013-2014. My opinion is that it is better for the students to write reviews because I went to the school. I love this school. I am an 8th grader and I came during 7 grade. Honestly there is a lot of cliques at the school but no gangs. Although, at the end of the day we all love each other and are all going through the same thing. On my last day of school EVERYONE cried. The school year ended way to fast!!! Your child will love it and it is a place for everyone to fit in and enjoy the year. I encourage you to at go this school ... Trust me you will have tons of good and bad memories just like me. I just graduated from 7 grade. And this school feels like my 2nd home. You can be yourself! Sports are very cool you should try out! Education is really important also. For example, if you are bad in math you can go to Leopard Academy. If you are a honors student let the counselor know and you will be put in a class great for you. Hop this helped :)

This school sucked. Its was really bad I went here 2011-2012 and the teachers had never gaven me work to do when i ask for the work they just say shut up and sit down. Then they on purpose held me back. Teachers dont teach or discipline the students. They try to control the bullying but dont do a good job about it. So this school is not that good.

I attended Smith Middle School in 98-99. I LOVED that school, the ppl and the teachers way more than the school I moved to which sucked. I dont know how the school is now but when I attended sure there were some incidents but all in all I had a wonderfun experience making great grades and was part of the national jr honor society and the teachers were AMAZING!!! Sometimes I wonder how my life would have turn out if I never moved. Definately an ode to SMS, GO LEOPARDS FOREVER!

This is my daughter's second year at Smith. Teachers are my gripe. I just do not feel they have the credentials they SHOULD have, and wish they would use the English language correctly. Once again this year I do not feel my child is learning much. Thinking of homeschooling again!

I have to comment on the screaming/yelling. The first day I enrolled my child, we were given a tour by another student. I was shocked by the number of classrooms that we walked by with screaming and yelling 'shut up' and such from the teachers. Students were walking out of the classroom. It appeared out of control. I was hoping that this was not normal; however, I had to check my child out on another occasion and a teacher was standing in the hallway (not far from the office) and was screaming negative comments. I realize students can be overwhelming, but it doesn't seem to be the most effective method of management. I have taught middle school for 8 years, but I have never seen that level of disorder. I personally witnessed these two incidents, as well as a couple of others. I have heard worse, but didn't witness the incidents.

i used to be a student as sms. i have transferred to a school out of state, and i must say that Smith is a much better school than i currently attend. sms was the first school on a military base that i have attended and i wish that all schools could be like smith middle. the sports and teachers are very interactive. there also a variety of things to engage as far as extracuricular activities. -Asya Moton

Thank you for a fair assessment of the current situation at our school. There are problems that exist on our campus, but there are probably some issues that need addressing at most public middle schools. The teachers and administration truly have the best interest of the students at heart.

This school was awesome when I attended it in 2005. I had alot of help with m,y special needs. These people who are puting bad reports here need to re look at things. Maybe its their child who needs help. My favorite Teacher was Ms. Valda Steele.Unfortunately she had gotten cancer and I have not heard from her in a while. I hear from other students that were my friends she is doing ok as far as they know. Ms.steele I miss you

This is the most horrible school my child has ever attended and being military that is more than his share for being in only the sixth grade. The teachers do not care nor do they concern themselves with the student's well-being. While there have been a couple of teachers who seem to be concerned the ones who pay no attention are the ones who teach the core subjects.

Im a student at Smith Middle School and I think it is a wonderful school! The teachers are great and they want to teach you what you need to learn before the TAKS test. The staff is very supportive. They have a great band program and a great sports program.Maybe the teachers need more control over the eighth graders and some of the sixth graders but other than that its a great school!

My child is now a seventh grader at Smith MS. I feel very confident that he is receiving quality education. It saddended me to have read such horrible reviews about the teachers. I believe that parents are the key to success in education. While teachers are there to bestow the skills and knowledge upon our children, parents have the responsibilty to send their children to school with an attitude that teachers can work with.

Last year my son was in the sixth grade at Smith. He did well but I don't think he was really challanged. The thing I worried about the most was bullying. There were a lot of problems with this. Most of my sons problems happened during P.E. class. I think the school needs to pay more attention to these incidents. The bullying children seem to always get off with little or no punishment. This is why I may not send my son back to Smith next year. The only reason I would send my son back to Smith is becuase I hear the seventh and eighth grade teachers are very good, and the older students I know there seem happy. Perhaps it is because they don't have to take P.E. where most of the bullying tends to happen.

I am a student at this school and I love it! I do not see how these people are saying these things about my school...let me just tell you, I am a cheerleader, I am a basketball and tennis player, I am in about 5 clubs, Theatre Arts and in all advanced courses, which I am getting straight A's and you people aren't there and cannot say how our teachers act. We have students in our school that just don't stop at anything and our teachers try but they are people to so stop putting my school down. ***Home of the Leopards***

I as a student think that the school is good but could use a little more work on leadership. And I bet your saying now : what does this child know? she is only in sixth grade. But the fact is that I got to the school and enjoy it. we have great school spirit and were recommended as the TEXAS SCHOOL with the highest CBA grades. Don't ever worry about your child getting into fights because wonderful Mr. Allison will cooperate with your child to help them and mrs.graves the counselor is always on the lookout for a child in need of help. the teachers aren't strict about work when it comes close to being devilish mean but they make sure the job gets done. This school is really good if you give it a chance.

Aug (06) My daughter attended Smith last year and is a 7th grader this year. I do believe a school is what the parents, kids, and administration make it. I had to become personally involved several times last year.

This school is in extreme need of a complete overhaul. The teachers are uninvolved and passive. Despite my child's good grades, she came away from her first year not having learned anything other than how to behave like the hoodlums who were in her classes. The teachers turned a blind eye to the promiscuous behavior that was the norm for a significant number of the students. We attempted several times to address issues at the school and were met with phony displays of intended cooperation. Last year will be the only year that any of my children will have been subjected to such a sorry excuse for a school.

I had two young men that attended this school for only one year, thank goodness! Though I was very pleased with the 8th grade team of teachers, the principal leadership was horrible. After having recieved an Academically Unacceptable rating, I decided to go ahead and let my sons attend this school, to be with their friends in the area which we lived. Not to make them feel like outsiders. They did very well thoughout the year, with all the credit being given to them. The extra-curricular activities and coaching was NOT good. Good luck to you if you choose to let your child attempt this school, remember it is your right to choose otherwise with an unacceptable rating. (I would if I had it to do all over again!)

My daughter just left Smith for high school. There is little or no control over student's behaviors. They have been acedemically unacceptable 2 years in a role. If your child attends school there, keep a close eye on their acedemic progress and stay on top of the teachers.

I had a daughter attend Smith in 2000 and it was a pretty good experience. My second child now is in her 3rd year at Smith and in resource. The school does not challenge my child and I feel that they promote my child only to avoid dealing with my child. Smith was having serious problems before the war started although I do agree that parents should be held more responsible for their childs actions being that this school is on post. The children pretty much have more control over the teachers than vice versa and I believe it is due to lack of administrative support and an equal and just discipline program.

Smith Middle School gets a bad rap. The teachers at this school deal with highly transient students and highly uneducated parents. Parents should lend a hand in helping teachers with their children instead of criticizing them. The test scores that I have seen show that Smith is ranked up there with the other schools. No other school in Texas has the problems this school has. Every child in this school is dealing with the war. It is a very unique situation that KISD needs to look into. We really need to take a good look at how we can help this school instead of criticizing it.

This school is not the place for well behaved children who want to learn. There is 1 teacher to monitor all of the children. So crowded they don't have enough desks or books for the kids.

Unfortunately my child attended this school, due to the fact that we lived on base. My child has a learning problem and was told 'there are too many kids attending here to work on just one' Also, I would like to know why there is a high turn over of teachers here, maybe KISD needs to look into parent complaints and take them seriously.
