INTERMEDIATE

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

I love the fact that the ACALC teaches students to be independent thinkers and collaborative learners. The group work my 4th grade granddaughter does is purposeful and closely supervised. They become confident about the way they learn and what they know. My granddaughter loves to read and write, and I attribute that to the fact that even as kindergartners, Alice Carlson students are encouraged to write. Sure, their writing is filled with mechanical, spelling, and grammatical errors, but those guidelines will come into play as they move through school. As it is, they see writing as a mode of self-expression.

Alice Carlson is a great school, all of the teachers are nice and helpful to everyone, for example, I need help and the teachers will try their hardest to explan what the student doesnt get, or if i need help finding a teacher or my class the will help you find what you are looking for. I like that they teach social skills and some schools don't, also you get to have at least 1 specials a day! I think my school can improve by have science more in grades k-4 and maybe doing some more hands-on projects. Also having more media time like 1h instead on 45m.

The staff of Alice Carlson has created a place where students belong to a community of learners. My granddaughter has learned independence and accountability. She has been encouraged to grow and learn. The hands-on philosophy inherent in applied learning has encouraged students to be confident and thoughtful. The garden behind the school provides a safe place for students to learn during the school day and play after school -- In May, first-graders formed a butterfly club and chased butterflies every afternoon after school -- with all butterflies released before they left for home. My granddaughter's teacher was firm and supportive; she expected good behavior from her students so that no one would interfere with learning in the classroom. The halls of the school are seldom empty: students may be doing group-work around a table, or two kindergartners may be taking a message to the office, or a teacher may be giving a student extra help. All are focused; I have yet to see a behavior problem in the halls. The support staff is also hands-on and helpful, from expecting good behavior in the cafeteria to making announcements as cheerful and interesting as possible.

We love this school. The teachers and administration are amazing. Our son attended another Fort Worth school that is highly rated nearby and Alice Carlson has blown them out of the water. Public schools teach specifically to the TAKS test, this school teaches far beyond tests. We are so thankful we were accepted here!!!!

We were so thankful when our kindergardener got into this school. We had heard all great things. We have been very pleased with the environment, the education, the teachers, and activities. They make a plan for each student and my daughter's teacher Mr. Joey is excellent. He's very focused on the kids' education.

The best thing a school can be known for is the ability to let the kids think, understand and rationalize the possibilities of a problem or situation. So many parents get caught up in numbers to define who their child is, they forget it's what they remember and can apply it to their lives. Applied learning may not be a campus for all students but for those that can think outside the box and for themselves, this is a school they can appreciate.

ACALC empowers children to take control of their learning by exploring different strategies to understand new material. The children learn by doing hands-on work that cements basic concepts. Students at ALALC love learning, and it shows in their faces when you walk down the hallway.

Alice Carlson is a unique learning environment. Instead of reading about how to do something, they do it. Instead of looking at pictures, they go see it in real life. Book learning only takes you so far. Alice Carlson teaches you how to think and how to do.

Alice Carlson has a student body full of dedicated children guided by the most enthusiastic teachers and staff members in our city. Our first 2 months of Kindergarten have already convinced me that this will be an enriching and rewarding education.

This is the most amazing school. The whole program of applied learning was an exceptional experience for my kids. I feel the students become very involved in their opportunities inn learning and experiencing the process instead of just memorizing for Taks test. The teachers are the best and always seem to enforce the positive instead of yelling and frightening the kids. Their is much less discipline problem with this approach. I love this school!

My child has flourished since he got there. His teacher is open, sweet and the communication between parents and teachers is great. My son is treated as an individual and allowed to express his affection and feelings. I was given an hour worth of input from the teacher after the first 6 weeks and was impressed as to how in depth his understanding of my child was. I am impressed with their use of the Outdoor Learning Environment in children as young as Kindergarten. I would sing it from rooftops if allwed...Wow!!!!!! Lorena Hattarki FWISD teacher

Alice Carlson is an exceptional school community. The teachers go beyond what is considered the norm for teachers. The entire school has an open door philosophy and is very reachable when questions or problems arise. The office staff is exemplary and is bend-over backward polite. I can't ask for a more perfect learning environment for my daughter.

This school is an absolute dream come true. The culture of this school is respectful. This school is working very well. The leadership from both the principal and teachers is excellent. There is a clear curriculum that is presented in an engaging and challenging manner. Problems between students are worked through in a respectful manner. Alice Carlson is a bright light in education. An amazing number of students have formed alumni groups and count their time at the school as among the best of their childhood experiences. My children blossomed in front of my eyes at this school and cherish their time there. The teachers are amongst the best both in knowledge of education and in heart. The principal is knowledgeable, kind, a strong leader and a true asset to the school.

My only real complaint is the school culture that has students addressing teachers and even the principal by their first names. Mr, Mrs , Ms being optional.

Kindergarten we got long newsy letters too. But these last 2 years, we have had almost no feedback on how our child is doing. We have had almost no homework in 2 years. There is a bullying problem at the school. The students form groups that exclude some students. The school seems to lack leadership and direction. There is a lack of organization and no one seems to have answers on what is happening. The teachers seem to be too laid back.

We love this school! Our children's experience at this school has been incredible. The K and 1 teacher kept us informed with long, newsy letters. Our children are now in the fourth and fifth grade. We have been very pleased with every grade and every teacher that we have been fortunate enough to work with.

K and 1st grade went well except I would've appreciated more communications with the teacher and not just ever 9 weeks. Also, it did seem in 1st grade they were focused on the TAKS test and teaching to it. 2nd grade has been somewhat of a disappointment so far. The kids are asked to do math each night but hardly any math has sent home so we must come up with problems or worksheets. It seems that there is no clear direction on what they are doing. We've let our concerns be known so now we hope to see what happens.

I just finished my first year of teaching at Alice Carlson. I found that the teachers and administrators are truly professionals. They are compassionate to children. They base their practice on current research in child development and on best practices from nationally recognized organizations such as the Institute for Learning. They are passionate about their work. I feel honored to be a member of the Carlson family. I can't imagine teaching anywhere else.

Alice Carlson is an exceptional school. We feel very blessed to have our children under the care and guidance of the faculty and administrators of this school. The children are challenged academically and are shown avenues for caring about the community. I can't say enough good things about the school community.

This is the greatest school. Both of my girls go there and next year my third will, too. We tried for 3 years to get in and it was worth it. I won't move from Fort Worth unless the girls could go to another school like this. Since we haven't heard of to many I think we are staying her for at least the next 6 years. This is a concept every school should apply. My daughters look forward to school. They learn so much more then why things are they learn how things are by thoroughly finding out all the ins and outs in everything math, science, reading, history, or any other subject. Friday clubs are also a great concept that allows parents to really get involved. This is a school where you can sit in the halls and come into the classrooms so you always know whats going on.

Alice Carlson does what very few public schools do these days -- teach kids to think. My children do not do worksheets or focus only on the TAKS test. Instead, their learning is integrated, meaningful, and project based. My kids are also learning for the sake of learning, as opposed to being motivated only by 'A's'. There's plenty of time for that later. My oldest child is now in high school -- a straight 'A' student in a competitive honors program. Alice Carlson prepared him well.

This is a wonderful, child oriented enviroment. The children are allowed to lead each other and themselves, while the teachers are there to guide students to learn about all aspects of the subjects presented. This type of enviroment encourages creativity, a great self-esteem and a love of learning. My children are happy to go to school, if they have questions about something, they are encouraged to research the item to learn the answer. A great example of this is while in 3rd grade, my daughter once asked her teacher if the US flag the astronauts left on the moon is still standing. Her teacher lead her through the research steps to find the answer (it is not, the exhaust from the rocket they used to travel back to earth knocked it down). What a joy it is to see my children seeking answers on their own and thinking beyond the surface!

I have sent one child through this school and I have been very pleased with his achievement. My second child is in fourth grade and I am looking forward to a successful year. Over the past 5 years, however the school has lost two quality minority teachers and the test scores of minority students have suffered. It is essential that minority parents adopt a hands on approach to assure that every advantage is realized for their children.
