As a former teacher, I can report that local politics are a mitigating factor that affects teachers' ability for autonomy in the classroom. The entire high school staff has turned over this past school year and they are looking for their third superintendent in three years. Until board members stop micro-managing the schools, new teachers simply become pawns.
The staff is impressive. They are strongly steering students to college & offering several DC classes. They are supportive, informative & really working to make the kids ready for post-high school life. Obviously, with small school activities are limited but it's the teachers do pay attention & offer guidance & support.
I went there, and i didn't feel i learned anything, probably b/c since it's a small school teacher dont feel they have to teach. There is a huge problem with unmotivated students and drug use and drinking
Fruitvale High School is a great school. Everyone of the students have good attitudes and gets along with each other. The teachers do a great job of trying to help every student indivudally. They will stay after school, and even come before school to help thier students improve thier scores and understanding in what they learn. Everyone dresses nice. Guys tuck in shirts that are required to be tucked and wear belts. Girls wear shirts that when they raise thier arms above thier head no skin shows. Fruitvale has a great envrionment for learning. I recommend Fruitvale school. (Senior 2005)
My children all attended this school and now my grandchildren attend. They received a quality education with opportunities that would not have been available from a larger school. The staff really cares about the kids, and it shows.
