Amount of homework: Just right
July 09, 2015
Some weeks it feels like my 2nd grader is drowning in homework, and other weeks I wonder where it is, but generally, it all balances out and I think our "too much" weeks are due more to our schedule than the amount of homework assigned. It seems to be pretty much the same every week.

I think that because the children work together they learn to respect their peers. The consistency in how the teachers and director deal with the students shows the kids how to treat others with respect.

My children have made some great friends at NCMA. The children work together and care for one another.

We have had issues with our girls in the school (because they're KIDS), and have always been happy with how the situations were resolved. Things were explained clearly and if I needed further explanation, the teacher or director made time to meet with me and discuss things until we both felt okay with whatever the situation was. I love the teachers, and the education my children are getting there.

Teacher effectiveness: Effective
July 09, 2015
My daughters both attend NCMA. My youngest (3) has the same Primary teachers that my oldest (7) had. We love every teacher we've had there from the infant room through lower elementary. My youngest is writing and trying to read. The oldest comes home talking about dwarf planets and botany. I'm impressed by the education they are getting at this school.

Teacher effectiveness: Very ineffective

I'm not even sure they are certified teachers at this point. My son was bullied by a teacher at this school.

Amount of homework: Not enough

None. Even though my now 7yo still cannot read. We asked for programs we could try to help at home, we requested more homework. We were ignored.

Develops honesty: Strongly disagree

They lie to parents about providing an education to your child. They do not provide education. The child is not their concern. Making sure they get your money every month is the only thing that they care about. Both of my children are terribly behind. That seems unfair to me. The reason they were attending the school was to learn and they were not taught.

My son and daughter were both enrolled in New Century Montessori Academy for two years. My son started there in primary and has shown no advancement. I was told that the problem was my son, so I got him into see specialists, all of whom said my child was receptive to learning. I set up meetings with the teachers and director and we came up with a plan to help get him on track. They did not follow through with any of the promises they made during the meeting. Then I started noticing changes in my son. He became withdrawn, hardly ever smiled and was scared to try anything new for fear of failing. I became concerned, kids shouldn't have worries like that. I requested access to the classroom camera (a service they tout as being provided but then they deny you access). Seven days later they granted me access to the camera in my son's classroom and I saw that he was being singled out by the teacher and humiliated. Unfortunately this was not the first time she had done this to him. I had caught her on several occasions singling him out but she would always explain it away or blame my child. She would have him sit in the middle of the rug and gather the other children around him and make him an example because he was slow to clean up or he started crying. In my opinion she bullied my child and encouraged other children to do so as well. Also, on the day I pulled him out because of her ostracization of my child, the school contacted my ex-husband to ask what was wrong instead of having a conversation with me. If there are ANY other options available to you I implore you to consider those first.

I have two children attending this school currently. This school encourages a multi-faceted approach to hands-on learning that has really enlivened my kids' curiosity to seek better understanding in learning , and solutions to real life situations. If you feel that a conventional classroom environment may be stifling your child's , a Montessori program such as what is offered at NCMA may be your answer.

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.
