I taught 5th grade at Gilmer Intermediate school during the 2007/2008 school year. It was the best year of my teaching career. For, the most part, parents were involved and came out to the school to participate in various events. The administrative team was very supportive as well, doing everything within their power to increase the efficiency of instructional time. The staff of teachers worked cooperatively and experienced much success.

My child had problems with bullies for 2 years. Conferences with the teacher and the principal did not improve the situation. We eventually transfered our child out of district and now she is happy and thriving. This district is also more focused on their football program than anything else.

If your child has learning disabilities, then expect them to have d-hall at least once a week. This is only class there seems to be a problem. NOt with just mine, but all who attend. Having a meeting with the teacher did not help. But other than that the school is okay.

Perhaps the parent that will not move from this school district until their child graduates should look at the school rankings. your children are not getting the education that your taxes are paying for and your taxes have just gone up to pay for all of the construction that they are doing. I graduated from gilmer and went to college and graduated. I had to study much harder and longer than my counterparts from other school systems simply because they received a much better high school education. While i took the 'difficult electives' at gilmer high school in reality they were not sufficient for college. The community needs to take a hard look at its school system and leaders and start taking action to correct this deplorable situation.
