Groesbeck High School

This school is rapidly moving towards Puritanism. The School Board has a new proposed dress code, which severely restricts clothing choices. As a parent, I and many of m fellow parents are strongly against this. That said, there are many quality educators there, including, but certainly not limited to Jill Harryman, Anneliese Lillie, Sherri Killingsworth, and Jimmy Roe. These four are simply the best educators in their field. The student body is diverse, just like other Central Texas schools its size. All in all, GHS is a quality institution but has many questionable policies.

I really would like to say that this school is a great place to send your children, but under the current administration, I can't. The superintendent and principal of Groesbeck High School seem to be out for no one but themselves. They want to change the way that small town schools function to fit their needs. I have a student in GHS, and while I think that he teachers are excellent for the most part, I know that they could be even better if they had the administrative support that they need. This could be a great school, like it once was, but something major will have to be done. It is impossible for the kids to receive fair discipline. Parents seem to run the school more than anyone. Great kids, great teachers, great town, but when the people in charge are corrupt, all of those things mean nothing.

I have had 3 children graduate from Groesbeck ISD. I was disappointed in the guidance each received pertaining to college & scholarships (academic & athletic). It is a good thing we knew academic leaders and athletic scouts at the colleges my kids were interested in--we would have been completely lost. Groesbeck is a nice school, but there is alot of room for improvements, especially in the athletic departments, and in the hiring of more teachers in different ethnic backgrounds other than 'white'. Right now I believe GISD has a total of 5 'black' teachers. They need to work on this area. We have lost many fine black teachers to the DeSoto School District and they all have done very, very well. There is a new superindendent in this school which I hope will improve this school. I have had two children graduate from this school, one a mediocre student, one an honor graduate, neither was prepared for college. I do believe a complete turnover of board members will be necessary to get this school back on the track it needs to be to give the children a good education. Under the previous administration several excellent teachers left the district. Most of them only went to an adjoining district, but took a substantial pay cut in order to be able to teach without politics getting into their classrooms. Some just wanted to teach, not have to coach. This school district, like many schools, puts a great deal of priority on the football program.

I'm a student, not a parent. GHS is a nice school, the building is new and very pretty, it's a nice place to be each day. We have many different class choices, lots of extracurricular activities available that most other schools this size don't offer. Students have many choices available in sports and academics, and some arts. The only things I have to complain about are the overly strict dress code and the low level of arts classes available. I can understand the importance of a dress code at school, but I believe that some areas of this dress code infringe on the rights of students to express themselves, as well as being sexist. As far as the arts go, I would love to be in orchestra, but it isn't offered here. There is no choir or dance classes either. We have the basics (theatre & band), but nothing more.
