Since my son has been attending Early College High School Fall 2011 to current Spring 2012, I believe that most of the teacher support is not good. ECHS has Project Base Learning (PBL) that are suppose to help mentor a student into becoming an independent person and leader of a group, but the truth is that these are ninth graders who haven't really grown up and most don't have the support of their parents which causes a lot of these students to not take the PBL over all purpose seriously. Also there is not enough support from the teachers who assign these projects. Most students don't or their parents, and can't afford access to computers needed by the student outside the school and can't dress approperiately for their presentations and the student is penalized. Some ECHS classes require a student to go onto certain websites to complete assigned homeworks. The school doesn't realize that this process is nothing but havic on a student who doesn't have access to the web or a computer and also for the students who do have access, the enternet for the assigned work on the web site can and will most of the times have problems. The students should stick to only assigned paper work.
2011-2012 Review on this school up dating the RATING . Middles Schools of Harlingen Tx beware when staff from this EARLY COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL comes and RECRUITS TO your 8th graders . Vernon,Memorial,Coakley,Gutierrez,Vela middles it is not true what the staff will tell the parents about how ECHS is ready to help your student. As a parent, I give this school a very bad rating because of how unorganized some of the staff are and how certain teachers don't help the students and have their favorites. It is true as the saying goes, the teachers give you ugly looks.Harlingen CISD needs to take a closer look at this program. The ECHS is unorganized and the certain instructors from TSTC are just as bad with their personal comments and intimidations towards minors who are trying to fit into an "adult" world. The parents who want their children attending this school need to be ready. Its not going to be easy and the support is very poor.
This school is very very active. Its peaceful and fun at the same time. Everyone knows everyone since were only aloud 400 students a year as of next year. The principle is a very remarkable women. My son never wanted to get up in the morning when it came to middle school but ECHS has really changed his tone, so much he's ready before 4 in the morning some time. Hats off to this asstounding school.
the students learn in a more serious enviorment compared to other high schools their expectations for learning are much higher, the students come to learn not to goof around this school is great for nerds and prepy nerds like my 15yr old son says.
Having worked at other public high schools and atprivate schools as well- I believe the the ECHS has a great approach to working with students and education. Students recieve the support, motivation, supervision and challenges. Student at this campus will not 'fall through the cracks' or become one of the many who just get by - which is sadly the case at many campuses. As an educator, (all levels through college) I highly recommend students & parents consider this opportunity.
